Opening Smart Health Tech Center “Driven by innovation and co-creation” Today is the official opening of the Smart Health Tech Center (SHTC) of Erasmus MC. With the establishment of the Smart Health Tech Center, the Erasmus MC has taken a crucial step towards becoming the top technical university medical center in the Netherlands. The idea of a Smart Health Tech Center is need driven. On the one hand, many companies are reaching out to us to develop and co-create innovative medical and health technologies. On the other hand, there are staff members who are looking for health tech companies as an innovative partner. The Smart Health Tech Center will connect innovative companies and the innovative staff of Erasmus MC and vice versa. The focus of the Smart Health Tech Center will be on the Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 4-8. The SHTC provides a central point for companies to connect with the right people and facilities at the Erasmus MC for co-creation, testing, validation, experimentation and demonstration of smart technologies. This can be clinical expertise, expertise in artificial intelligence and robotics, data, or a living lab facility. The mission of Smart Health Tech Center is to boost novel technologies for health, especially those based in robotics or advanced Artificial Intelligence techniques-or those introducing new types of sensors or monitoring technologies. The Smart Health Tech Center wants to support and stimulate growth of these technologies by testing, validation, demonstration and experimentation. To make sure the technologies we support are of clinical relevance, we check all requests within our expert communities. The SHTC created 7 communities with clinical experts: - Future Surgery Community - Future Radiology Community - Future Oncology Community - Future Emergency Care Community - Future Cardiology Community - Future Mental Health Community - Future Remote Care Community By doing this, we make sure that all technologies fulfill a real clinical or patient need, and that they will fit workflows and existing systems when deployed. The Smart Health Tech Center will professionally assist with the organization of contracts, pricing arrangements and provide guidance throughout the development process. The SHTC liaisons are happy to connect with the right company and clinical/scientific experts and facilities at Erasmus MC. For this we will put a fast-track in place. Meet SHTC:

Collaboration and knowledge-sharing are essential to drive meaningful impact in healthcare. Day 1 of the Intelligent Health AI event in Life Science hotspot Basel highlighted how AI technology is reshaping the healthcare landscape. With strong Dutch representation across industry, academia, healthcare, and government, it was inspiring to witness a global effort to advance innovation for a more sustainable future. Alex Ng from Tencent Health showcased how their WeChat based platform is integrating AI to streamline physician referrals and triage in China, where finding the right doctor is a significant challenge. While the system enhances patient health literacy, concerns remain over its ability to support populations with limited education or access to technology. Meanwhile, Felice Burn from Kantonsspital Aarau AG emphasized the importance of GenAI in enhancing efficiencies, while Bill DeWeese pointed out the challenges organizations face in regulating "Shadow AI" as individuals adopt tools faster than institutions. Northwell Health's extensive AI integration program was another highlight, focusing on creating personalized patient and healthcare provider identities to match physicians and patients effectively. Though impactful, concerns about the potential downsides of such profiling remain. In a regulatory panel moderated by Erik Luysterborg from Deloitte, Anke Arnold-Tugulu of AZAFAROS B.V. and David Christen from Gerresheimer explored the delicate balance between innovation and compliance. John Olwal of Takeda stressed the importance of balancing risks and applying frameworks like Takeda’s PTRB to ensure trust and ethical AI use. The first day of discussions underscored the importance of collaboration across borders, sectors, and disciplines. It’s clear that only through collective efforts will we be able to harness AI’s full potential in healthcare while addressing the challenges it brings. Look forward to day 2 with Data Science Center in Health (DASH) colleague Peter Van Ooijen's panel discussion and my opportunity to present our activities on bringing LLM's into the clinical conversation at UMCG! #HealthcareInnovation #Collaboration #SustainableHealth #DutchInnovation #IntelligentHealth2024 Health~Holland International

Aanwezige partijen: Giliam Wevers, Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit (NZa), Robin M. 🌐✨ Reflections on the ICT & Health World Conference 2024 in Maastricht ✨🌐 📅 Last week, we attended the ICT&health World Conference in Maastricht. The conference underscored once again that the shortage of healthcare personnel is a growing problem. With a shortage of 50,000 workers, which could rise to 120,000 within five years, it is clear that we cannot continue as we have been. Innovation is essential. 💡 Fortunately, technology offers hope. Artificial intelligence was a central theme at this conference, with calls from Minister Conny Helder, among others, to embrace this technology now. The sessions ranged from basic AI introductions by Stan Snijders to in-depth presentations by experts such as Prof. André Dekker and Aashima Gupta from Google Healthcare. 🎤 We also attended the inspiring demo by Nuance - Microsoft, showcasing the power of speech recognition. However, it is unfortunate that this technology is not yet available in Dutch. 🛠️ The workshop by TU Delft on designing AI-supported health pathways was a good reminder of the importance of working with design thinking. It emphasized how crucial it is to keep the needs and experiences of users at the forefront when developing technologies. 🙋♂️ Dave deBronkart, better known as ePatient Dave, also stressed the importance of patient participation with his call: “Give me my damn data!” It was a powerful reminder that the patient must be central, with full access to their data. 🔍 It was great to see that, alongside sharing (future) visions, there were also concrete demos of successful innovation projects. One example was the session by MUMC and Philips on their tele-ICU. 💪 The conference was a source of valuable insights and inspiration. It is clear that with joint effort and technological innovation, we can address the challenges in the healthcare sector. At the Smart Health Tech Center, we are eager to contribute to this endeavor.
