"When it was reported that three whales had been killed in krill supertrawler nets in 2021, we were told that this was an 'anomaly' and that the industry would take steps to prevent it from happening again. Now another four whales are dead, a direct consequence of dragging nets large enough to swallow a jumbo jet through foraging pods of whales while targeting their primary food source. Clearly nothing has changed." - Peter Hammarstedt, Sea Shepherd Global Director of Campaigns 👉 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/ge8GrcDN 👉 Take action here: https://lnkd.in/edknsuTa

Over 40 years of direct-action campaigns to defend, conserve and protect our oceans and marine wildlife.
Over ons
First established in 1977, Sea Shepherd is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organisation. Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations. Created in 2012, Sea Shepherd Global is an independent entity from Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in the US, and operates as the umbrella organization for independent Sea Shepherd groups throughout the world which continue anti-whaling campaigns in the Southern Ocean.

Did you know your plate can protect the ocean❓Cooking is a powerful form of activism, just ask our cook, Tuti! ⚠️ Here’s why it matters: Animal agriculture creates massive ocean dead zones, strips seas of wild fish to feed farm animals, and drives up ocean acidity. In short, it’s killing our oceans. That’s why we’re 100% vegan on board—keeping our crew strong and our oceans healthier. This #WorldVeganDay, try a plant-based meal and see how delicious protecting the ocean can be! Already eating vegan? 🚨#BREAKING: Once again, crucial protections for #Antarctica’s fragile ecosystem have been blocked. At this year's #CCAMLR meeting, Russia and China vetoed vital proposals to establish new Marine Protected Areas and improve krill fishery management. "The failure to establish new Marine Protected Areas in Antarctica is a devastating setback for the preservation of one of the planet's most critical ecosystems. Industrial krill fishing undermines global efforts to combat climate change, and endangers the foundation of Antarctic life, putting whales, penguins, and seals at risk," says Peter Hammarstedt, Campaign Director for Sea Shepherd Global. Despite this setback, Sea Shepherd remains unwavering in our commitment to protect Antarctica’s fragile marine life. We will intensify our efforts to expose harmful fishing practices and advocate for meaningful protections. The future of Antarctica cannot be held hostage by short-term interests—we call on all nations to prioritize the preservation of this irreplaceable ecosystem for generations to come.

⚠️ Right now, a historic vote is underway at the annual #CCAMLR meeting to establish a Marine Protected Area along the Antarctic Peninsula. The future of this fragile ecosystem depends on urgent action to curb relentless krill fishing that strips essential food from whales, penguins, and seals. We’re calling for no-take zones in key feeding areas to give these animals a fighting chance. This isn’t just about marine life; it’s about our planet’s future. 🌍 “Approving the proposed Marine Protected Area is not just an option—it is an urgent necessity. Member nations need to prioritize the health of our planet and block the detrimental short-term economic interests.” - Sea Shepherd CEO, Alex Cornelissen Read the full article and find out how you can help: https://lnkd.in/dDetJbUN Share this post or comment below to raise your voice for Antarctica’s protection!

Every fishing vessel leaves a mark—some are just better at hiding it.. While not all of them are #illegal, each one adds to the crisis our #oceans are facing. It’s a tricky situation: the damage is clear, but we can’t stop those operating within the law. What we can do is measure their impact and team up with local authorities to catch those who cross the line. So far, our efforts have led to the arrest of over 90 illegal fishing operations.✊ Curious about the worst offenders? ⚠️ Yesterday afternoon, 7 pilot whales were killed in Hvannasund, #FaroeIslands. It’s unclear if any were pregnant or had young calves. This adds to the grim reality that, in 2024 alone, the community of Hvannasund has hunted over 370 pilot whales. Earlier this year, there were claims that no further hunting would take place, as the local demand had been satisfied. Yet, this tragic event tells a different story. (The images are from June of 2024 in Hvannasund.) 👉 What Can You Do? • Support our #StopTheGrind coalition's work. • Follow the @seashepherdfo IG account to help provide an online community that empowers Faroese locals to stand up against this brutal tradition. • Watch our latest myth-debunking video about the cruelty of the grind via the link in our bio, and spread the word to raise awareness. https://lnkd.in/digKbCnX After watching the video, what are your thoughts? 🐋 Unite to End #Whaling in Europe! During last week’s EU Ocean Week in Brussels, together with our #StopTheGrind Coalition, we hosted a crucial webinar, "Blue Manifesto in Action," focusing on cetacean protection and strategies to combat whaling in Europe. Our #FaroeIslands Campaign lead, Valentina Crast, along with WDC’s Lottie Pearson, shared strategies from anti-whaling campaigns that emphasize public support, political action, and promoting whale-watching as an alternative to whaling. Additional key takeaways included: * The Blue Manifesto: Presented by Rémi Conssetti from Seas at Risk, this roadmap aims for a healthy ocean by 2030 and could pressure European whaling nations to enhance cetacean protection. 🌍 * Legal Strategies: Alice Di Concetto outlined how the EU can enforce trade restrictions and ban whale product transit to ensure compliance with international whaling laws, particularly against non-EU countries like the Faroe Islands. 🚫 * Human Rights Advocacy: Dr. Anna von Rebay emphasized that whaling undermines the right to a healthy environment, urging the use of human rights mechanisms to challenge its destructive impact on biodiversity. ✊ The message is clear: European nations and citizens must unite to strengthen protections for cetaceans and put an end to whaling! 🔗 Find out more here:

#GoodNews for the Caretta caretta! 🐢 After 25 years of dedicated conservation, the Mediterranean’s beloved loggerhead #seaturtles are making a remarkable comeback, with over 1,200 nests recorded this year on Zakynthos’s Sekania beach! ⚠️ However, the fight for their survival is far from over. Recently, our #SeaEagle crew rescued a Caretta caretta tangled in fishing gear during our latest SISO campaign in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This incident underscores the ongoing threats these turtles face from illegal fishing and pollution. Together, we can make a difference❗ Join us in our mission to protect marine life—support conservation efforts, raise awareness, and advocate for stronger protections against the dangers these incredible creatures face.
