🛫 What does it take to achieve sustainable aviation🌱? How to accelerate innovation? And what can we do for existing aircraft? In this Pioneering Tech video 🎞️, Rinze Benedictus (Professor Aerospace Materials and SAM XL board chairman) and Marios Kotsonis (Professor Flow Control) provide the answers. You can build a fantastic, sustainable airplane. But if there’s no airfield where it can re-fuel, because it’s hydrogen powered, and if it can’t land, then it won’t be used. You’ve just created a museum piece 🏫. The entire system must be addressed. And there is urgency: improving efficiency is much-needed in the European aviation industry, which has to become C02-neutral by 2050. Automation to the max! Previously, when 3D scanning an object at SAM XL, we had to manually enter the poses for the scanning robot 🤳. This morning, Mink Verschure gave a demo of his internship project on Capture Pose Optimization for 3D reconstruction, where he paved the way towards automation of this step 🤖. Mink showcased both a feasible way to solve it, as well as highlighting the challenges associated with developing a system consisting of so many hardware and software components. "SAM XL is enabling an exciting transition towards a more sustainable aviation industry 🛩 🌿 . Being able to have a positive impact on the way we travel through the skies makes me feel motivated, and that is why I already took the opportunity once to work at SAM XL as a MSc Thesis student. It was great to have you, Dutch and German composites experts! Sharing knowledge on innovations is key to speed up sustainable manufacturing🌱🤝. It was an inspiring event, organised by  CompositesNL, Composites United and hosted at SAM XL and TU Delft.   SAM XL showcased several innovative technologies, a.o. continuous ultrasonic welding of thermoplastic composites 🧑🏭 and autonomous robotics for smart manufacturing and maintenance 🤖🛠️.   Many thanks to the organisers, the keynote speakers, the demo partners, our guests and the SAM XL and TU Delft colleagues👏.

Latest demo of autonomous XL robotics! During a visit of a Dutch delegation for the NXTGEN Hightech project, we demonstrated our progress towards fully autonomous, smart robots.   For automation to be successful, it is essential for a robot that the virtual world corresponds to the actual physical world. That normally requires manual programming. We are working on programming robots in such a way, that they scan a large, double courved surface and configure themselves accordingly. In other words, the robot can adapt its processes autonomously, enabling flexible processes for smart manufacturing, maitenance and repair of large surfaces ⚙️🔧✈️.   We will steadily continue to work towards the next step in zero-defect robotics 🤖👌.   Many thanks to our engineers: Aashish Vatsyayan, Kate Twiss, Nithish Kumar for your efforts to showcase this innovation 👏; and program manager Martin Kampinga for your clear explanation of its indispensability towards sustainable industry 💡! 📣 Technology update: SAM XL involved in cold spray project!   Have you ever heard of cold spray? This emerging metal deposition technology is very promising for repairs and additive manufacturing.   SAM XL is supporting the NWO (Dutch Research Council) funded project CSAR, in which TU Delft | Aerospace Engineering researchers John-Alan Pascoe, Calvin Rans, Mary Patrick and René Alderliesten will investigate the fatigue and damage tolerance properties of cold spray repairs. This will speed up acceptance of this technology for aviation MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) ✈️ 🔧.   The combination of inducing compressive residual stresses without significant heating of the substrate, makes cold spray an interesting option for restoring dimensions of damaged aerospace components - especially those that cannot be welded. This will allow repairing parts that currently have to be scrapped, ensuring that we make better use of scarce raw materials 🗑️ ➡️ ♻️.   SAM XL  Materials & Process Engineer Bram Jongbloed joins the User Committee of the CSAR project alongside Dycomet Europe/ Titomic Europe (Klaas Rozema), KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Engineering and Maintenance (Wim Vollenberg), NLR - Netherlands Aerospace Centre (Bernard Bosma) and ADSE Consulting and Engineering (Aart Verbaas). Together the User Committee members will provide feedback to the research team, and help ensure that project results will be converted into real world applications as fast as possible ⏱️. Aside from feedback and advice, SAM XL is hosting the Titomic D623 cold spray machine to fabricate samples.
