𝐀𝐈 𝐁𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 For me personally, the lightning-fast development of AI is a real candistore: I enjoy feeding my curiosity. But if you're not close to the field, the craziness can be daunting and difficult to cut through. It's not unthinkable to secretly whish for some AI winter and catch a breath. People often ask me how I look at AI and what makes Rewire different from any other of the gazillion AI service professionals out there. I could talk for hours and write books about this, but I tried to distill 3 high-level thoughts. I feel we're in a citical phase. May be even silence before the storm. The gap between hype, potential, and reality is expanding across three crucial areas. It’s critical that executives understand these to inform where to place their bets. 🔍 1. 𝐇𝐲𝐩𝐞 - 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬: 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐬 𝐯𝐬. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 Generative AI's emergent abilities have fueled the belief we’re on the edge of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). But no one really knows. The next breakthrough is far from guaranteed, and executives need to differentiate hype from what’s actionable today. ⚙️ 2. 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 - 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 While innovation on the foundation models layer is step-wise, a flurry of innovation is happening around them at the application layer. Complementary innovations create compound AI systems that push boundaries on daily basis. It’s not about waiting for AGI—today's technologies already possess massive potential. 🏢 3. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 - 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐝𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞 While consumers have AI at their fingertips, enterprises lag. The latest trend in the AI hype is the advent of autonomous organizations - examplified by the notion that "the first 1-person unicorn company is near" (ref. Sam Altman). Startups and big tech alike are racing to develop AI agents that could soon handle a variety of tasks with minimal human input. The surprising and apparent capability of LLMs to apply reasoning is the key driving factor behind the excitement around AI agents. However, LLM reasoning is far from perfect. A recent study by Apple researchers took a broad range of models to the test and confirmed that ... “...current LLMs are not capable of genuine logical reasoning; instead, they attempt to replicate the reasoning steps observed in their training data.” Similar to how LLMs sometimes hallucinate information, their reasoning is fragile and sensitive to changes in input. This is likely to improve on the bruteforce path of training with more data and compute, but will not be solved inherently in the current technology paradigm. In the nearterm, there is truly exciting and massive potential for agents and low hanging efficiency fruit to be captured. But they aren’t ready for complex, higher-stakes decision-making just yet. Looking ahead, new approaches like neurosymbolic AI—combining formal reasoning with machine learning—will be required for real autonomy. Rewire
