On 17 May, we mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia. Under this year's theme "No one left behind: equality, freedom, and justice for all", various forms of advocacy and celebration are encouraged that may come from LGBTQIA individuals and civil society organizations, as well as allies. As MEL practitioners, how can we ensure inclusivity for LGBTQIA communities in our work? Here are what we can do: 🌈 Engage key stakeholders and prominent members of the LGBTQIA community throughout the development and implementation of the MEL plan. 🌈 Avoid assuming everyone is heterosexual and all people are women or men. 🌈 Respect preferred names and pronouns, and how people define their gender and sexuality. 🌈 Consider using inclusive language (e.g., "partner/spouse" instead of "wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend", "parent" instead of "mother/father", "everyone" instead of "ladies and gentlemen") and be sensitive regarding terms and jargon that might be offensive to LGBTQIA communities in certain contexts. 🌈 Acknowledge the diverse identities within the LGBTQIA groups. Recognize and respect the difference between sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics. 🌈 Always remember intersectionality, understanding that LGBTQIA individuals may belong to different ethnic, religious, educational, and geographical backgrounds. Tailor tools and approaches to be accessible and reflective of their experiences. 🌈 Safeguard the privacy and security of LGBTQIA individuals when collecting data. 🌈 Recognize the negative effects of discrimination, stigma, homophobia, and heterosexism on an individual's well-being and their access to the programs we implement and evaluate.   #IDAHOBIT #IDAHOBIT2024
