June 25th Helena Voetterl succesfully defended her PhD titled: Biomarkers from Bench to Bedside: Realizing a future of EEG-Based Stratified Psychiatry. Congrats Helena Voetterl! In her PhD she developed and clinically validated an EEG biomarker - called Brainmarker-I - as a biomarker to stratify ADHD or Depressed patients between various evidence based treatments, resulting in higher remission rates. This has become a great piece of work, with an unparalleled string of 'blinded-out-of-sample-validations' and resulted in prospective use in clinical practice at Synaeda! Join me in celebrating 100 years of EEG, please reshare! On July 6th, 1924 Hans Berger recorded the first EEG on a human, only published in 1929. This invention of the EEG has resulted in many clinical applications ranging from diagnosing epilepsy and sleep disorders to Brain Machine Interfaces (BMI/BCI), neurofeedback and EEG as the first clinically actionable biomarker in precision and stratified psychiatry. Last week Hannah Meijs succesfully defended her PhD titled: Decoding Complexity: A data-driven approach to unraveling transdiagnostic markers in psychiatry. Congrats Hannah Meijs! This has become a great piece of work, probably including the largest amount of EEG data ever in a PhD, exceeding >7.5K unique EEG's and sophisticated analyses applied, including fICA LORETA and AI/Deep Learning. Sleep problems are present in many psychiatric disorders. We recently reported the presence of sleep problems resulted in worse response to TMS in OCD (Gajadien et al 2023). Here we asked the question if the presence of a sleep disorder predicts worse response to DLPFC TMS in Depression using a specific sleep disorder questionnaire. Using two large samples (N=299) we did not find differential response related to the presence of a sleep disorder. Read the details in the publication below. FDA Advisory Panel votes against Lykos/MAPS MDMA-Assisted therapy both on efficacy and risks. More homework needed in psychedelics trials: Better blinding required, preventing selection bias and mitigating risks for abuse. Maybe a role for AI-based tools in the assisted therapy part? #TMS Certification #Course & Masterclass was held in Nijmegen, the Netherlands in May 21-23, 2024 Topics that were covered are circuit-based and network brain stimulation, the SAINT/SNT TMS protocol, new clinical indications of TMS including #OCD, transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS), alternative coil positions, accelerated TMS and iTBS, precision TMS, stratified psychiatry and TMS induced heart-brain coupling (HBC). #Deymed was one of the main companies with equipment at the course.
