ICYMI: Sophie Edwards reported in Devex that the The World Bank Group has contracted global law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer to lead an independent review to determine whether the IFC - International Finance Corporation interfered with the Office of the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAO)’s investigation of child sexual abuse at the Bridge International Academies schools it funded in Kenya. The Bank has specified that Freshfields will focus on whether or not the CAO had sufficient access to information and cooperation from IFC management and staff, but that misses the point entirely. The real scandal that Freshfields needs to probe is the secret non-disclosure agreement that IFC's general counsel arranged with Bridge in the middle of the CAO investigation, and the conspiracy to "neutralize" the CAO compliance specialist who was leading the investigation, so that wrongdoing related to child sexual abuse at Bridge schools would not become public while the company was in the middle of a fundraising round. The Intercept published documentary evidence of the meeting between IFC management and Bridge where this plan was hatched. As our Executive Director David Pred told Devex, “If Freshfields doesn’t investigate those explosive allegations, leading to concrete reforms at the World Bank Group, then this probe will be a complete waste of time and public resources.” https://lnkd.in/gTydb47b

📢 ‘Paris Alignment’ principles: What’s in a name? Despite implementation of joint ‘Paris Alignment’ principles by many of the key Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) a year ago, significant loopholes still allow funding for fossil fuels. In this blog, our researcher Ceren Temizyurek explores the need for MDBs to close these gaps and shift focus to sustainable renewable energy. ✉ 60 civil society organisations have signed a joint statement urging the EBRD to enhance its human rights due diligence. 📝 Despite some improvements, the latest drafts of the EBRD’s updated good governance policies fail to ensure human rights are respected and protected, especially in countries with significant democratic deficits. This is becoming increasingly urgent now that more and more EBRD countries are seeking to adopt new ‘foreign agent laws’ that put civil society at risk. We’re calling on the EBRD to take responsibility for the impacts of its investments and stop passing the buck to its clients.
