Research institute for quantum computing & quantum internet
Over ons
At QuTech, we work on a radically new technology with world-changing potential. Our mission: to develop scalable prototypes of a quantum computer and an inherently safe quantum internet, based on the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics. Established by TU Delft and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research TNO, the focus at QuTech currently covers nearly all facets of quantum computing, including theoretical physics, new materials, quantum coding, and the actual development of (components of) a quantum computer.

🔎 At QuTech we have many engineering expertises, today we highlight our Systems Engineering team! 💡 Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary, disciplined approach to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle followed by design synthesis and system validation. 🚀 At QuTech, we believe that systems engineering contributes to the development of robust and scalable quantum technology. We apply systems engineering by structurally working according to design methods such as the V-model or MBSE. This way of working allows us to bring the quantum technology to the next level. 🎉 The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded an NWO Veni grant to Tim Coopmans. The grant (320 thousand euros for a three-year program) will allow him to search for promising methods for correcting errors in quantum computations. Congratulations, Tim! 💡 Building big enough quantum computers for practical applications is mainly prevented by errors in the quantum chips. Tim Coopmans will use his grant to have conventional computers find new methods for correcting these errors. The computer uses logical reasoning for this, acting like ‘Sherlock Holmes’ who logically deduces who the most likely suspect (a good method for correcting errors) is. In other words, by automatically deducing ways to correct errors in quantum computers. ✍️ Currently Coopmans is employed by Universiteit Leiden and will start at EWI/QuTech per 1 October as assistant professor. It's time for the last edition of 'QuTech Superpositions'! This has been our weekly interview series in which we speak to a QuTech member about their work, their goals and what makes them happy. We hope you enjoyed learning about the people behind QuTech! 👋 To close off this interview series, we feature Hitham M. Ashry, Safety Officer and Fabrication Engineer at QuTech. ❓ Hi, could you please introduce yourself? 💬 Hi, I am Hitham Mahmoud Amin, QuTech Safety Officer as well as a fabrication engineer. I am originally from Egypt, I did my Master and PhD at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, followed by postdocs at the Politécnico de Milano, and Shenzhen University in China. In the Netherlands, I started my journey as a postdoc at TU Delft in 2015, and it has been filled with excitement, challenges, learning, and personal growth. ❓ How does your work contribute to creating the quantum future? 💬 As the Safety Officer, I strongly believe that creating safety culture and ensuring a safe working environment at QuTech, are crucial not only for the well-being of the QuTech community but also for our ability to achieve groundbreaking R&D, sustain growth, and drive the success of QuTech’s quantum future. As an engineer involved in the fabrication, monitoring, and characterization of quantum devices, I believe that these processes enable precise control and provide a detailed understanding of materials used for qubit fabrication. This is crucial for the qubit scaling up phase, and to steering toward a future shaped by quantum technologies. ❓ What is your favourite thing about working at QuTech? 💬 My favourite thing is being part of a team which is passionate about quantum technologies and eager to be at the heart of revolutionary research and development. This is what makes QuTech an incredible place to work at. ❓ What do you like to do outside of work? 💬 I enjoy playing softball, running (including running after my two kids), and reading. Nowadays I am also learning theatre and fishing. Learn more about what life at QuTech is like 👇 https://lnkd.in/eFpiQiQT
