A humanitarian disaster of unprecedented proportions is currently unfolding in Sudan. Two warlords are waging a bloody battle in which sexual violence, mutilation and ethnic cleansing are the order of the day. Some 25 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian aid, 9 million of whom have now fled the violence and left everything behind. Although the conflict has flared up considerably in the past year, some parts of Sudan have been in crisis for decades. On 26 June, we will talk about what is currently happening in the country and the historical context that is crucial to understanding why it is in such a deep crisis. We will also discuss how foreign influences have been contributing to Sudan’s destabilisation for decades and whether they could possibly bring about positive change 🇸🇩 Guests include Sudanese activist Abdulaal Hussein, Thirsa de Vries of PAX and Leon Willems of Free Press Unlimited. After the panel discussion, there will be informal drinks in the garden. In the process, delicious Sudanese food and music can be enjoyed. Be welcome! Register now via https://lnkd.in/er_pYUvK

The environment is not simply as a set of natural resources, but also as a shared public space, a domain of public health, and an arena of political economy. For us, environmentalism is not a “technical” issue, but rather inseparable from MENA’s broader political and economic discussions. Hear from PAX for peace’s Project manager Wim Zwijnenburg, on the impacts of oil pollution in North East Syria and the direct results of conflict on the oil industry in Iraq. This interview was taken during our second annual conference on the 'nexus between climate change and conflict' co-organized in partnership with Robert Bosch Stiftung. You can also watch the recording of Panel 1: 'Extractive industries and conflict in MENA region', which explores the ways in which extractive industries, especially oil and gas, have contributed to local conflicts in southern Iraq, North East Syria and Yemen. Since the start of the civil war in #Sudan, the fossil fuel industry has been badly damaged by attacks, lack of maintenance, and sabotage. This has caused big environmental problems like oil fires that pollute the air, oil spills that harm the soil and ecosystems, and not enough energy for humanitarian needs. There are also problems for #SouthSudan because they cannot export oil. This has caused an economic crisis since the government cannot get oil revenues to pay employees, including security personnel. Some oil companies are storing oil in large open-air ponds because there is not enough storage space. This is very risky for the environment, especially if these ponds collapse or flood, which could harm the Sudd wetlands. In our new PAX for Peace research article, we used satellite images to document all these issues and created a map to show the current situation as an early-warning system. 🔗 Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/eQBaFQcz Wim Zwijnenburg Centre for Information Resilience Planet EUSI Nadir Hassanein Ariel Ozdemir Frans van der vleuten
