What a weather 🌞 ! Summertime, time for sweet strawberries 🍓🍓🍓 from the cool fridge 😎 ! We want them fresh and crisp, whenever we buy them and ideally keep them for a few days. Strawberry growers and the rest of the supply chain are working day-in, day-out to get them to the store and your fridge ASAP. But often they are in the dark about upcoming quality surprises like remaining shelf-life. It is so great to see that companies like Albert Heijn and Bakker are open to work with a start-up like OneThird in an early stage and develop a quality system which will disrupt the way they assess quality and take faster, smarter decisions to avoid unnecessary waste and cost and get produce to the consumer as fresh as possible. Changes they have made to the supply chain, acting on the data OneThird provides, will get strawberries in the store at least a day faster, and rewards growers who are able to delivery premium quality! I think this is an excellent example how technology can help transform the food supply chain and meet the United Nations SDG challenges they've committed themselves to. Just another #hardwarewednesday! This week I want to showcase 🍓 OneThird 🥑 from the Netherlands, who make optical sensors that "look" inside fruit to predict their shelf life. Food stores struggle to sell fruits and vegetables at optimal freshness levels. This results in throwing away a lot of fresh produce. OneThird combats this #foodwaste which results in: 😋 Consumers get better quality! Nothing worse than treating yourself and buying expensive strawberries and realizing most of them are rotten, or buying a rotten avocado you were going to make guac with... 🌱 Improved inventory management for retailers, and potential for better produce agreements between suppliers and stores Their name is also a clever nod to the horrifying fact that 1/3 of all food is wasted. A fantastic #hardwaresolution to a HUGE problem. SaaS would alone not solve this one 😁 The combination of sensing technology data and AI platform is one I admire! 🥇 🧠 Backstory for this post: We can't code ourselves out of our ongoing parallel crises (food crisis, biodiversity crisis etc). I am sick of impact investors who do not invest in hardware. A huge opportunity missed! South Korea has managed something incredible. It recycles 95% of all its food waste. Globally, 1.4 billion tons of food ends up landfilled. But not in South Korea. Everything is turned into fertilizers, animal feed, and biogas there. It's the law! Their fight against food waste started in 2005 when they banned sending food to landfills. One of the biggest success factors: South Koreans pay depending on how much they throw away. Every food scrap has to be carefully separated and collected for recycling. The country has a vast system of high-tech waste management infrastructure, so it's easy for people to use, and efficient to operate. Still, the best waste is no waste. Engaging citizens via laws, community programs, and economic instruments are all powerful tools to get us there. Does your country need this?
