In 2024, the Collecting Otherwise Tool Shed continues its mission to learn about and share new tools for collaborative archival practice, with a final edition entitled Borrowing, Maintaining, Shedding. This year’s focus is on the iterative, collaborative enactment of these tools with donors, researchers, archivists and archives, sharing knowledge, wisdom and resources. Read more about this year’s iteration: https://lnkd.in/eW7AVxnW Collecting Otherwise is contributing to the lasting development of the acquisition process of the National Collection for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning at the Nieuwe Instituut. Together with the Collection Nieuwe Instituut, the research results (from the Oral History trajectory, the Network Archive and Asterisk*, for example) will be implemented in the institute’s latest collection and acquisition policy, and summarised as results in the Disclosing Architecture trajectory. Opening today: Promised Land! Visual artist Serana Angelista adds context to photographs from their family archive using natural materials such as cowrie shells. The artist shifts the viewer’s gaze from the face of the person portrayed to the circumstances in which they lived and the emotions and associations this evokes. Promised Land addresses the reliability of institutional and living archives and is part of the exhibition curated by Gyonne Zafira in Rotterdam and Aruba, How Do We Remember? Visit Forms of (ex-)Change, where graphic designers from the Netherlands and Germany engage with the idea of change in the broadest sense of the word. The exhibition, which was originally developed on the occasion of the Leipzig Book Fair 2024, is a collaboration between the Nieuwe Instituut and the Dutch graphic design programme at Werkplaats Typografie, the independent Leipzig bookshop MZIN, and the System Design class at the Academy of Fine Arts (HGB) in Leipzig.

Last month, Nieuwe Instituut was appointed as curator of the cultural programme for the Netherlands’ participation at World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Nieuwe Instituut is the national museum and institute for architecture, design and digital culture in Rotterdam. They will develop a programme that spans the breadth of cultural fields and partners—both in the Netherlands and Japan—in responding to the overarching theme of the Netherlands participation: “Common Ground”. Common Ground brings people together to solve global challenges.
