Technische Universität Dresden is the coordinator of the #IntelliLung project – the team will manage two clinical studies: a retrospective clinical study and a prospective observational multicenter study to validate the AIDSS – AI Decision Support System developed with the InfAI - Institut für Angewandte Informatik. Retrospectively, data from former invasively ventilated patients will be used; at the same time, current data will be collected and evaluated in a prospective study. The project involves clinical and academic partners as well as two manufacturers of ventilation technology. The decision support system is designed to provide the treatment team with a recommendation for the cessation of mechanical ventilation. Not only the oxygen supply, but also the respiratory rate and ventilation pressure have to be adjusted continuously depending on the physical condition and the treatment status; this is not a static condition, but a process. The goal is to minimize ventilation time, thereby shortening the length of stay in the intensive care unit and also reducing lethality. It is the first clinical study coordinated by TU Dresden for which the European Union #EUHorizon has approved funds. 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐜𝐀𝐢𝐫 𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐔𝐤𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞 In 2020, during the hectic early days of the pandemic, intensive care units faced a serious shortage of ventilation equipment for corona patients. At the request of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport / VWS), Demcon rapidly developed the DemcAir ventilation system. The DemcAir was based on the unique ventilation technology developed by Demcon macawi respiratory systems for use with every patient, from premature infants to adults. The separate ventilation modules had been in production at Demcon for many years for supply to foreign respiratory system manufacturers. Now, for the first time, Demcon developed a complete ventilation system itself, for a domestic client. Demcon developed the DemcAir system within four weeks and delivered a total of 500 systems to VWS. Fortunately, the peak of corona patients had leveled off and the DemcAir did not need to be deployed. Since then, the systems have been in storage. Recently, VWS decided to donate them to Ukraine. Demcon was requested to service the systems and replace parts where needed. Last month a team from Demcon location Best performed the service with the help of colleagues from other locations. All systems were tested and parts replaced where necessary. VWS had set a deadline of June 1 to be ready for shipment; thanks to the enthusiastic efforts of the Demcon employees, May 17 everything was ready for shipment.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹? This intriguing question came from the Clinical physicist and Biomed Department at St. Antonius Ziekenhuis and was something we were excited to delve into. 🔎   Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting 40 medical professionals from the St. Antonius Hospital in the Netherlands, for an inspiring day. Our goal was to learn from their experience in managing medical equipment in their hospital. And to provide end users with an in-depth look into our development of medical systems, from the inception of novel product ideas to the series production of certified systems.   Lisa opt Hof, Managing Director of Demcon life sciences & health, welcomed the group with an introduction about Demcon. In the development of medical systems, it's crucial to meet user expectations and improve satisfaction for both patients and healthcare professionals. Peter Munck de and Hans van Leersum reminded us of this important aspect by introducing their Clinical Physicist and Biomed team. He explained, together they manage all hospital MedTech equipment including 2 PET-CT scanners, 5 MRi scanners, 6 cathlabs, 7 CT scanners, > 20 software systems, 25 operating rooms, 40 ICU’s, 120 Ultrasound systems, >800 patient monitors and many more!   As biomed end users, it's important to get a feel for the technology used in medical systems, like we develop at Demcon. We were thrilled to have Wouter Markus, CEO of the Haermonics, demonstrate the PURE system and a motivational story about his learnings as CEO of a tech start-up and collaboration with Demcon. Following this, Patrick Kleuskens, Managing Director of Demcon macawi respiratory systems, shared insights about our own product company, and Marnix Zoutenbier, CTO of Demcon data driven solutions, explored the world of synthetic data with demonstrations that brought the stories to life.   It was a fantastic opportunity to bridge the gap between innovative engineering concepts and practical use within a hospital setting. The clinical trial is progressing smoothly, with 12 patients already measured using our respiratory oscillometry setup. The setup is performing well, particularly in supportive ventilated patients. For the first time ( 🎉 ), mechanical parameters like compliance and resistance can be monitored in this challenging ventilation mode. We presented these interim results at the International Symposium on Intensive Care & Emergency Medicine, which sparked exciting ideas for future exploration. As we continue our journey, we look forward to testing our setup on 9 more patients. The research was conducted at the intensive care department of UZ Brussel in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Joop Jonckheer, the VUB ELEC - Electricity and Instrumentation department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and our industrial partner Demcon macawi respiratory systems.
