Een team onderzoekers van LIACS Media Technology en de UvA onderzochten op Lowlands hoe bewust mensen zijn van kansengelijkheid. Veel mensen schrijven hun succes toe aan eigen prestaties, terwijl het eigenlijk om geluk gaat. Bekijk de video die op Lowlands werd gemaakt. Researchers Hanjo Boekhout, Frank Takes and Arjan Blokland from Leiden University have developed a method to predict which sellers will be successful in illegal online marketplaces. Professor Vedran Dunjko leads the Applied Quantum Algorithms Lab. His research focuses on quantum computing, which uses quantum effects to greatly improve computation. This could lead to much more powerful computers. Developing a working quantum computer is an ongoing effort, bringing both exciting possibilities and potential security risks because of its superior computing abilities. The 6th episode of our podcast series is online now. Tessa Verhoef has a passion for robotics and is dedicated to improving the human-likeness of robots, for instance by looking into their use of language. While her expertise involves AI and robotics, she also delves into language evolution, exploring how languages form and transform over time. 

We are very happy and proud to announce that a paper has been published on the ‘Do-it-Yourself-Scanner’ in Nature Communications. This unique project is a collaboration between a team of international researchers from CWI (Amsterdam, NL), Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (Leiden, NL), Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, NL), The British Museum (London, UK) and the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, USA). Joost Batenburg is the last author on this article, Willem Jan Palenstijn is 2nd author and Francien Bossema the first author and she will defend her thesis on this subject on 23rd May in Leiden, https://lnkd.in/e4P_7frt Press Release: https://lnkd.in/e9gVZF3c Announcement: What if you could saw a wooden sculpture through to look at the tree rings? Could a clay sculpture be hollow? What type of instruments were used to craft art objects? These questions could be answered by X-ray imaging. In particular, CT-scans are useful to investigate historical art objects on the inside. The CT-scans that are suitable for this application are however not easily accessible for researchers and quite expensive to acquire. An international team of researchers, including researchers from the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), has therefore developed a method to use existing X-ray imaging facilities for CT scanning.
