Congratulations to Leiden Professor Theoretical Astrophysics Elena Maria Rossi for joining the LISA Science Team!🎉 The LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) mission will be the first space-based observatory dedicated to studying gravitational waves🛰️. These are emitted during the merging of supermassive black holes and other large sources out of reach of current ground-based detectors. The planned launch of the observatory is mid-2030. The members of the LISA Science Team work to ensure the correct implementation of the scientific goals of the mission and its maximum science return. Rossi: ‘This is the first ESA LISA Science Team. We need to define our relationship with the broader community, and specifically with the existing consortia that are working towards realising the LISA data analysis and science usage. It is all new! Exciting and challenging of course.’ #LeidenScience #LISAmission #ESA #gravitationalwaves

On the 20th of June, we officially opened the TU Delft Swarming Lab! Although we've been collaborating with students and researchers over the past year, this event marks the formal beginning of our dedicated journey into swarm robotics research. We would like to give our thanks to all attendees, speakers, and contributors who made this event a success. Special appreciation goes to Guido De Croon, Raj Thilak Rajan, Chris Verhoeven, and the team over at Emergent Swarm Solutions, as well as Daniëlle Dekker and Carma Schaap from TU Delft Science Centre - TU Delft. Without their guidance and support, this event and lab would not have been possible. If you are a student, researcher, or anyone engaged in the field of swarm robotics and are considering embarking on a new project, thesis, or research initiative, we encourage you to get in touch with us. Together, we can shape the future of swarm robotics!

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Jian Guo and his team from TU Delft | Aerospace Engineering and TU Delft | Civil Engineering and Geosciences! 🛰 Their innovative research proposal, Alticube , has been selected by European Space Agency - ESA for further development with a team of ESA experts. 🌊 Dr. Guo explains, “The goal of Alticube is to measure water levels worldwide more frequently, accurately, and cost-effectively. This will provide better insights into changes in height and currents, essential for improved early warning systems and a better understanding of the long-term global water system.” Alticube aims to link multiple small satellites, CubeSats, with long deployable booms to create a relatively inexpensive long baseline of ten meters or more. This baseline is necessary for creating detailed 3D images. This breakthrough will significantly enhance our ability to monitor and respond to global water level changes, contributing to a safer and more sustainable future. Last week Friday we had the conclusion of our first LDE Space for Science & Society programme Thesis Lab. After working hard on their individual thesis projects or on their consultancy group project, the 5 law master students from Leiden University and 6 management master students from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University presented their shared results and recommendations on how to improve the use of Space Evidence for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. By combining their different fields of expertise, the students were able to provide a more holistic view and recommendations to mature the market and improve the international (legal) framework. A powerful demonstration of what inter- and trans-disciplinary teamwork can accomplish! A big thanks to Wim Ploeg for offering us an exciting topic for our thesis lab and the extensive support throughout the thesis lab. It would furthermore not have been possible without our LDE experts team for the in depth lectures and supervision: Tanja Masson-Zwaan, Robert Heinsch, Dimitra Stefoudi, Sabrina Rewald, JD LLM, René Olie, Ramon Hanssen. Thank you all for your extra time and effort to make this thesis lab a reality! Also a big thanks to all the sector experts that have helped us during the programme. Thank you for for being available for us and the students to exchange your knowledge, experience and expertise. As part of the thesis lab programme we also had the pleasure to be welcomed at ESA/ESTEC, International Criminal Court and EUSPA - EU Agency for the Space Programme's Galileo Reference centre (Peter Buist). Thank you all for hosting us! And off course we also want to thank the speakers at last week Friday's seminar (see Wim's post). It was and exciting afternoon with which we closed our thesis lab programme in the Hague with the students and experts from the sector and universities Last but definitely not least I want to thank all the thesis lab students for their hard work and dedication. Congratulations on a job very well done!!! Stay tuned for the white paper and we are looking forward to our next Thesis labs for 2024-2025!
Satellite Data in the Context of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law: Lessons Learned and Steps to take Space Evidence for Human Rights (SEHR) is looking back on a successful and rewarding seminar on 21 June.
