New Data Story by Land Portal Foundation on challenges of securing land rights in post-conflict Burundi. Securing land rights requires that conflicting claims to land are addressed and resolved. In Burundi, village peace committees have been established and their members trained to make conflict mediation accessible for the most vulnerable. One way of addressing disputes is through community dialogues. The success of these dialogues in resolving land disputes in Nyanza-Lac demonstrates the potential of this approach. In eight months, 15 cases were resolved through dialogue, with participants reporting high levels of satisfaction with the process. https://lnkd.in/eFDeWJ22

📖 Looking for something interesting to read this summer? IDLO - International Development Law Organization has published their 2023 annual report, which marks their 40 year anniversary. IDLO writes that 2023, like the previous years, has been a tough test for rule of law, justice and human rights around the globe. The report shares cases of increased access to justice around the world, also in Rwanda. The LAND-at-scale programme works in Rwanda with IDLO on customary and informal justice mechanisms and to build their capacities in managing and adjudicating land disputes. C’est le nombre total des terres obtenues à travers la campagne 'Femmes et jeunes pour un Tchad sans faim' après plusieurs années de mobilisation de masse, de plaidoyer et d’actions diverses auprès des autorités traditionnelles, administratives et champions genre. Oxfam au Tchad à travers le projet 'gouvernance foncière inclusive et juste au Tchad' du programme Land-at-Scale, a tenu ce matin à reconnaitre cette avancée significative pour l’accès des femmes et jeunes ruraux à la terre agricole en décernant des attestations et trophées à ces autorités, #champions genre et membre de la campagne. 🤝 Pour Mr. Youssouf Faradj Mabrouk, Secrétaire Général du ministère de l’Aménagement du Territoire, représentant le Ministre de tutelle, son département saisi cette occasion pour réaffirmer l’engagement du Ministère à faciliter la sécurisation des terres acquises, la mise en valeur de ces terres ainsi que l’amélioration de la gouvernance foncière au Tchad. *** *Presentation of awards to administrative and traditional authorities*. #10600 hectares. This is the total amount of land obtained through the ‘Women and Youth for a Hunger-Free Chad’ campaign after several years of mass mobilisation, advocacy and various actions with traditional and administrative authorities and #gender champions. 🤝 Oxfam Novib in Chad, through the LAND-at-scale programme, was keen this morning to recognise this significant step forward in rural women's and young people's access to agricultural land by awarding certificates and trophies to these authorities, gender champions and campaign members. #landrights

Take-aways day 1 - part 2 at #FairLAND2024 💪 This afternoon we had two sessions where LAND-at-scale shared key contributions. ✋The first session focused on #conflict where we saw examples from Somalia, Burundi and Uganda and the incredibly complex conflicts between IDPs/returnees and host communities. A critical reflection was how seeking clarity on boundaries and uncover and resolve disputes, could potentially enforce existing power relations, thus negatively impacting marginalised communities. 🌳In the second session, key changes related to the EU Deforestation Regulations (#EUDR) were shared. #Landrights can be key to validate the legality and traceability of produce back to its plot origins, though more (accurate) data is needed in order to achieve this. 🚺 🚹 The afternoon was closed with a plenary session which zoomed in on the link between land, #gender and #climate. Two key statements stood out: 1. The impact of climate change is #not gender neutral  2. Women’s access to land greatly influences her ability to #adapt to climate change The pressure on land is clear. Climate change will negatively impact food production, but climate change will also affect women’s ability to claim compensation in case of climate disasters, such as cyclones or flooding. 🚀 And we have kicked-off at #FairLAND24! The conference started on a critical question ➡ What is deepening social #injustice and what are entry points to addressing this? After a brief opening by Gemma Van Der Haar and Janwillem Liebrand, the three key note speakers coming from academic and advocacy perspectives reflected on this central question. Some key take-aways by each of the speakers: Frances Cleaver - Inspired by her research on institutions, she shared that in order to deepen social justice, we should pay renewed attention to the #institutions of collective action at a very local level, as these institutions, farmer associations, irrigators groups, women's groups, indigenous peoples groups, are the institutions through which people claim resources, make collective action arrangements, and make sense of their lives and their relationship with each other in the environment.  Bram Büscher - Challenged us how we can all #speaktruth to power where injustices are present. Speaking from his own experience, the academic world is losing its ability to speak truth and call out such injustices. In fact, activism is increasingly not recognised as academics. He called out to his academic colleagues to continue the old fashioned rootless critique of power. Morgan Ody - As General Coordinator of La Via Campesina Morgan shared her insights in advocating for peasants globally, stating that there is resistance to the systems of power and there is a long history of uprisings against agrarian reform. She introduced the hypothesis that capitalist modernity which came to rise 500 years ago is responsible for current deep rooted injustice. In addresses injustice, farmers should be seen as the link between nature and society. Moderator Liz Alden Wily closed the session by inviting conference attendees to voice their ideas, also in the sessions to come.
