🌟 Meet Our Experts at the IWA World Water Congress 2024 in Toronto! 🌟 Introducing our next set of researchers speaking at this year's IWA World Water Congress in Toronto! Meet Martijn van Veggel and Siddharth Seshan, both researchers in our Water Treatment & Resource Recovery team. 🧪 Martijn will present his research on "PFAS removal during drinking water treatment using GAC: Adsorption, Regeneration and Destruction." He will discuss how PFAS adsorption compares to the removal of other organic micropollutants and what happens to PFAS when saturated activated carbon is regenerated at high temperatures. “Join us as we share our findings and explore effective ways to eliminate the persistent family of 'forever chemicals.'” 💨 Siddharth's presentation is titled "Biokinetic Modelling to Predict Seasonal Variations of Nitrous Oxide Emissions from a Full-scale Wastewater Treatment Plant." Siddharth will share insights on predicting the N2O (nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas) seasonal emissions peak and the underlying biokinetic processes responsible for it. Results suggest that kinetic parameters related to free nitrous acid (FNA) lead to increased N2O production. “Further research is needed to better understand the biochemical processes driving the seasonal peak and the impact of FNA, which will contribute to the refinement of future biokinetic models and their prediction accuracy.” 📢 Stay up to date on all of the presentations here on LinkedIn and via our Instagram and event page. 🌊 B-WaterSmart: Towards a Water-Smart Society 🌊 At the B-WaterSmart Project, KWR and partners developed two circular pilot projects in Flanders. These pilots explored how a water-smart economy and society can look in practice. The focus was on water reuse, energy recovery, and extracting valuable materials from wastewater. The pilots demonstrated that innovative, circular concepts can enhance the resilience of the water system and water supply on a regional scale. 🚰 Robust Drinking Water Treatment The Diksmuide/Woumen pilot explored how De Blankaart, De Watergroep's drinking water production centre, can be made more resilient to future climate change threats. The pilot showed that the village of Woumen's WWTP effluent, once purified, can serve as a reliable supplementary source for drinking water production. 🌾 Water Buffering for Agriculture In the Mechelen pilot, rainwater from a separated sewer system was collected and buffered in a new, smart-controlled basin. After purification, this buffered water became available for nearby agricultural fields. 📖 We now have a B-WaterSmart Magazine that includes all the outcomes of these projects. 🌟 Meet Our Experts at the IWA World Water Congress 2024 in Toronto! 🌟 We are excited to introduce two of our researchers speaking at this year's IWA World Water Congress in Toronto. Meet Caro Mooren and Lisa Andrews, both researchers in our Innovation & Valorization team. 🌎 Caro will present her research on "WEFE nexus governance assessments: insights from the Lielupe and Nestos-Mesta river basin." She will discuss the challenges encountered when implementing WEFE nexus governance in a transboundary context and share insights from her recent research. “Our analysis shows that in both cases, the governance arrangements are restrictive towards WEFE nexus governance. We identify four key conditions to overcome the transboundary governance challenges.” 🤝 Lisa's presentation is titled "Conceptualising collaboration activities for impactful transdisciplinary research projects in the water sector". Lisa will share her insights on enhancing impact in transdisciplinary research projects through specific project activities. “Collaborating in transdisciplinary research projects across sectors and disciplines is a challenge. To integrate and co-create knowledge, we argue that certain types of project collaboration activities are required.” 📢 Stay up to date on the presentations and insights from our experts! 🏙️ Exciting New Research on Urban Cooling and Water Management in Artificial Turf Fields Gijsbert Cirkel and Marjolein van Huijgevoort of KWR Water Research Institute have just published a scientific paper in ‘Frontiers in Sustainable Cities’ as part of the ongoing TKI project CitySports. This innovative project addresses the challenges urban areas face due to increased population density and climate change. ❗ Problem In many urban spaces, such as sports facilities or parks, artificial turf has replaced natural grass because it can be used more intensively without the need for recovery time, mowing, or irrigation. However, these artificial turfs can heat up to over 50 degrees Celsius, posing risks of burns or heat-related illnesses. Cooling through irrigation is temporary, requires large amounts of water, and poses health risks and unwanted algae and bacterial growth. Additionally, rapid rainwater runoff from artificial turf can increase flooding and degrade water quality due to leaching substances and microplastics. ⚽ Project CitySports The project focused on a solution that combines rainwater harvesting and capillary irrigation systems to address these cooling needs. A system was created that stores rainwater in a layer beneath the artificial turf, which then cools the turf through evaporation. The main challenge is to do this without compromising playability or causing excessive bacteria and algae growth. The properties of this system were tested on a small scale in the lab of KWR Water Research Institute, on test surfaces at the Marineterrein Amsterdam, and on a training field at sports club Laan van Spartaan. 📊 Results Results showed that artificial turf with a cooling system could be up to 25 degrees Celsius cooler on hot days, reaching temperatures similar to natural grass. The air above the field was also cooler, reducing the Urban Heat Island effect. Additionally, the system holds four times more water than conventional artificial turf, approaching the capacity of natural grass. 🔎 If you are interested in more research results, you can read the scientific paper here: https://lnkd.in/gJiMDTxt 🔎 You can read more about Project CitySports here = https://lnkd.in/gk38rSDF The project is in collaboration with PERMAVOID TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED, Gemeente Amsterdam, DutchBlue World, Veolia, Waternet, and Marineterrein Amsterdam, co-funded by TKI Watertechnologie.
