We are proud to have been a sponsor of EGOI 2024. Many of us live with preconceptions of programming being a male profession. But many of the early programming role models were female! Think of Ada Lovelace, or the programmers of the ENIAC in the 40s of last century, or the ladies programming the Electrologica at #CWI in Amsterdam. B.t.w. - really a missed opportunity that CWI mentions only 2 female researchers in its wiki page amidst 53 people mentioned... Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica
Last week we organised EGOI 2024 in The Netherlands. This high level scientific programming contest for high school girls from around the world was held in The Netherlands between 21-27 July 2024. Find the pictures here: https://lnkd.in/ebwiA8K4 Our goal was to identify and motivate talented young women to pursue an education and career in maths and informatics. The stereotype of Computer Science being a men-only profession persists. Many young women do not even consider this field, even though they have talent and would enjoy it. This is where our competition comes in: girls who may not have the courage to participate at an Olympiad in Informatics feel included and directly addressed, enabling them to find the self-confidence to participate. We also held a knowledge fair. The participants met with female Scientists from a variety of different situations. This is important, as most attachment figures are male (e.g. teachers, professors, Computer Science stars). Another goal is for women in Computer Science to utilise and develop their full potential. To achieve this, young women need a sense of achievement, self-confidence, and acceptance. We have shown the outstanding careers and accomplishments to which young women can successfully aspire. Thank you to all 196 girls from all over the world to come to The Netherlands. And, this would not have been a success without our volunteers and sponsors. Thank you all. Do not hesitate to reach out if you would like to know more about this wonderful event or are interested in becoming a part.
