🌱 Circularity Series: From Aromatics to Sustainable Construction, Explained 🏗️  Let's dive into an incredible cycle that turns a basic chemical into a key material for construction, all while having the potential for recycling and sustainability. Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ Aromatics: Aromatics are organic compounds which are essential building blocks in the chemical industry. They make up everyday items such as plastics, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. 2️⃣ Derivatives: These are the 'second stage' to what aromatics are converted to before materials. We can use styrene as an example, which is an essential component of rubber, insulation materials and fiberglass. 3️⃣ Expanded Polystyrene (EPS): EPS is a lightweight, rigid foam made by expanding polystyrene beads. It’s known for its excellent insulation properties. It is commonly seen in packaging materials, disposable coffee cups, and protective packaging for electronics. 4️⃣ Construction and Buildings: In this context, EPS is widely used in the construction industry for insulation boards, lightweight fill material, and structural insulated panels (SIPs). This ensures energy-efficient homes and buildings, keeping interiors warm in winter and cool in summer. 5️⃣ Recycling back!: This is where Infinity Recycling is proud to come in! Polystyvert allows for post-use EPS, like when buildings are taken down, to be recycled into new EPS products, reducing waste and conserving resources. Alternatively, EPS and plastic waste can be chemically recycled back to its basic components through a technology like BioBTX's, creating a circular economy!    Understanding a product's life cycle and encouraging innovation to expand and strengthen this cycle is exactly what we at Infinity Recycling advocate for! 🌍✨ Infinity Impact: Reflecting on a Day of Action ✨🌍 Last week, the Infinity Recycling team rolled up our sleeves and organized a city cleanup with CLEAR RIVERS in Rotterdam! Over 1.5 million tonnes of plastic waste is created each year in the Netherlands- collecting litter and waste throughout the city provided us with even more motivation to experience and further our vision of a circular economy for plastics. We didn't stop there: We repurposed plastic waste with The Good Floor, and what we collected will be transformed into beautiful art by Janet Otter (Studio Tiny Pieces)!    As investors in the recycling industry, it's crucial for us to not only advocate for sustainable practices but to actively engage in them. A huge thank you to our dedicated team and the wonderful organizations who joined us in this initiative. Styrenics, such as polystyrene and ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) are a versatile plastic you may think you don't know but are used everywhere we go! Lightweight, durable, and an excellent insulator, they are found in: -Insulation materials for buildings 🏠 -Arts and Crafts materials 🎨 -Sports Helmets ⚽ -Toys: LEGO bricks 🧸 -Electronics, like video game consoles 🎮 -Automotive Parts 🚗   Despite its utility, styrenic products often end up in landfills and oceans. Marine life such as fish and birds can mistake small pieces of styrofoam for food, leading to blockages, malnutrition and even death. These devastating consequences emphasize the importance of effective recycling and waste management solutions. Mechanical recycling poses its own challenges, as it grinds styrenics into small pellets which can degrade the quality of polystyrene over multiple cycles. Incineration consists of burning the products for energy, which releases harmful emissions in itself.  So what's the solution? This is where advanced recycling comes in! Employing a unique dissolution method which dissolves the styrenic waste into a solvent which removes contaminants, what we thought was initially unrecyclable is able to be purified and reprocessed into new products at a higher quality. This can handle contaminated and mixed styrene waste, saving intensive resources on sorting!  🏅🏅🏅   By investing and supporting specific and forward-thinking/advanced recycling methods like these, Infinity Recycling hopes to move towards a more sustainable future! 🌱💪     What are your thoughts on styrenic products? Infinity Recycling is thrilled to announce the final close of its Circular Plastics Fund I ("CPF"). Following the accession of Dutch insurance group ASR, Danish philantrophic association Realdania, ING Sustainable Investments, the sustainable investments arm of ING, Danish invetment and holding company KIRKBI A/S, and the impact investment initiatieve of Swiss company Après-demain SA, CPF has reached EUR 175 million in committed capital thereby significantly surpassing its EUR 150 million target. Infinity Recycling was founded on the premise of helping to accelerate the world's transition to a circular economy of materials. 🌍 🌍 🌍 And whereas the circular business model has retained its attractiveness, regulatory uncertainty has undoubtedly had a somewhat damping effect on the speed of the transition. But no more 🎉 🎉 🎉 Last week the European Parliament voted, by a large majority, to approve new rules to reduce packaging waste, by promoting the reuse and recycling of packaging. ✔ ✔ ✔ The regulation will help accelerate the transition to a circular economy and focusses on five key areas: 🚅 🚅 🚅 1. Packaging reduction targets, in particular where it concerns plastics 2. Certain single use plastic packaging to be banned from 1 Jan 2030 3. Encourage reuse and refill options for consumers 4. Enhance recyclability of packaging 5. Recycled content targets for plastics packaging The vote in parliament also paves the way for advanced recycling to be counted as recycling and therewith ensuring that also the more difficult waste streams can be appropriately valorised and re-used in a circular production process. ♻ ♻ ♻ Infinity Recycling is excited about this important milestone and is looking forward to help Europe meet its ambitious circular economy targets together with its partners and investees.
