Did you know that 99 per cent of the protein we consume globally still comes from unhealthy sources, with little regard for the environment?😮 The environmental and social impacts of conventional protein consumption in Europe are substantial and often overlooked. Based on our participation and findings from the EU-funded LIKE-A-PRO project, results reveal the hidden costs of our dietary choices, underscoring the need for a shift towards healthier and more sustainable protein consumption. Some key highlights: 📊 The true cost of conventional proteins, when factoring in social and environmental impacts, is significantly higher than their current wholesale prices. To bridge this gap, we need to work on value chain transparency while increasing knowledge of opportunities for change. 📊 Only 1% of global protein consumption comes from healthier and environmentally alternative sources. 📊 Meat and dairy are responsible for 83% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the average EU diet. 📊 Agriculture contributes to 93% of ammonia emissions in the EU, leading to water and soil acidification. 📊In 2022 alone, billions of animals were slaughtered, highlighting the scale of our protein consumption. It's time to rethink our food choices and consider the broader impact of what we eat. By mainstreaming alternative proteins, we can pave the way for a just protein transition. Last week, our Research Fellow Loes Verdonk travelled all the way to the island of Vilm in the German Baltic Sea to participate in the ValuGaps Summer School on Economic Valuation of Natural Capital: From Theory to Practice. The Summer School was an initiative by ValuGaps, together with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BfN), Umweltbundesamt - German Environment Agency (UBA), and German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. It was aimed at PhD candidates, early career PostDocs and researchers to deepen their knowledge on both the theory and practical application of various economic methods for biodiversity and natural capital valuation🌿 "During this intensive program, I improved my understanding of natural capital and ecosystem services valuation more than I could have imagined. We delved into so many key topics in combatting the natural capital degradation and biodiversity crises we are facing today:'' 🟢Ecosystem Services Valuation: Current trends and future directions 🟢Ecosystem Services: Quantifying them with ecological models 🟢Health and Wellbeing: The link between greenspace exposure and human health 🟢Practical Applications: From the use of the Ecosystem Services Valuation Database (ESVD) to integrating ecosystem services valuation in policy contexts A heartfelt thank you to ValuGaps for their impeccable organization and engaging learnings. We are creating a Handbook Impact Measurement for the Built Environment! Supported by and in collaboration with seven parties, all active in various parts of the built environment value chain. In the first half of 2023, Wonam, Zadelhoff, Resi, Homevest and Impact Institute collaborated on the project 'Mookly, pilot impact measurement'. The aim was to quantify and monetise the societal return of a new housing complex that - compared to an average development - invests additionally in social and environmental aspects. In April of this year a follow-up project started to create the first version of a Handbook Impact Measurement for the Built Environment, with a group of four additional parties: Dalpha Real Estate, Dura Vermeer, NLV (Nederlands Vastgoed) and Vesteda. Common concepts such as establishment costs and asset valuation, have been enriched with a quantification and monetization of environmental and social impact. “A significant risk for making progress on sustainability is that companies potentially will merely focus on "ticking the box", that they will only do the reporting and not work with the results. This could lead to superficial compliance without meaningful change. That is not the intention of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) - with this Directive the EU wants to create a greener future for all.'' From a tick-the-box exercise to a kick-the-box opportunity, we sat down with Reinier de Adelhart Toorop, Head Researcher at Impact Institute and Lecturer Sustainable Finance at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, who told us all about CSRD developments in the past decade.
