An average supermarket contains tens of thousands of products produced and sourced 'as close as possible and as far away as necessary'. Behind those products are extensive value chains, sometimes with global ramifications. Other retailers and producers also have to deal with a giant web of international supply chains. The big question, of course, is: How do companies gain insight into everything going on in their value chains and take responsibility for it? European legislation obliges companies - rightly so - to have an increasing duty of care over all aspects of their value chains. On numerous issues: #CO2 #emissions, #deforestation, #biodiversity, #humanrights, #animalwelfare, #livingwage, #foodsafety. As ImpactBuying, we guide these companies to (1) gain certainty about what goes on in their chains and (2) make a positive impact on people and the environment with their supply chains. Our belief: everyone can be an impact buyer! This video captures our strength in 38 seconds: https://lnkd.in/edNUVVsz Featuring Marjan De Bock-Smit, Moniek van Roon, Roos Vergeldt, Brechtje Helderweirdt, Leontien Hasselman - Plugge, Sharon Reuveny and of course all our fellow ImpactBuyers! #supplychainmanagement #retail #riskmanagement #ESG, #CSRD #CSDDD #ImpactBuying #whoarewe #transparency #sustainability #valuechains #humanrights #takingresponsibility

What do buyers need to get started with working on living wages with their selected suppliers? At IDH, we recognise that whilst addressing living wage gaps ideally requires long-term cooperation between buyers and producers (and other key players in the supply chain), voluntary contributions serve as a good first step for buyers who want to make a difference. With support from our partners in the banana, tea, floriculture and apparel sectors, we have developed the ‘Buyers’ Guidelines: Voluntary Contributions to Support Closing Living Wage Gaps’, which contain three step-by-step toolkits for implementing voluntary contributions. Marjan De Bock-Smit celebrated the publication of the the ‘Buyers’ Guidelines at the Living Wage and Living Income Summit 2024, in the Milestones and Celebration session. It is crucial to highlight that the ultimate goal is to ensure workers receive living wages through negotiations, particularly via social dialogue and collective bargaining agreements. While voluntary contributions can play a role, they cannot fully address the root structural issues causing living wage gaps or replace the importance of collective bargaining. While this falls outside a buyer’s sphere of influence, voluntary contributions do not. 🔗https://lnkd.in/eBQNcNSb #LivingWage #collaboration #Summit

Keti Koti & value chains – there is still work to be done. Every 1st of July there is Keti Koti, it's the festival of broken chains. Slavery therefore seems like something from a distant past. Unfortunately, slave labor still occurs. We often think of ultra-cheap products (Shein t-shirts, for example), in factories far away. But make no mistake. Things can also go wrong with luxury brands in Europe. For example, Dior handbags made the news last week. The carabinieri had raided a sweatshop near Milan where the bags are made and found Chinese and Filipino workers working there in primitive and unsafe conditions. The workers, some of whom are undeclared, slept above the factory. 'Made in Italy' sounds good, but does not guarantee slave-free production. Similar is the example of tomatoes from Italy, where we conducted an Impact Assessment on human rights with ImpactBuying in 2022. So close to home, migrants pick the tomatoes and live in appalling conditions. Fortunately, we are heading in the right direction. Last week attention was also paid to the barcode, which will make way for a QR code in 2027. Such a QR code can contain a lot of information. For example, about the place of origin, including satellite images and sustainability criteria. It would be right if working conditions were also included. Europe is working hard to achieve fair and transparent value chains. From this financial year, large companies must report on what is happening in their chains. Empty promises are no longer acceptable. Moreover, they become responsible for all abuses in their chains, even if they occur at suppliers. Now the bosses of Dior, who sell the bags for 49 times more than they buy, are still going free. Only the subcontractor is held responsible. Ultimately, of course, the power lies with the consumer. We decide every day with our wallets for the world we want. Of course, this is only possible if we really know what we are buying. The fact that Keti Koti is being celebrated more and more is a hopeful signal for what we want our world to look like. Want to know how we are trying to make a positive impact? Did you meet ImpactBuying these last three days in Barcelona at the Gartner Supply Chain Symposium? The yearly symposium gave great insights into the newest #Scope3 solutions, #GenAI & #AI, #multitiermapping, #ethicalsourcing and much more. A couple of key takeaways: ▪ Create transparency to build trust. At the moment, 76% of globalized supply chains have become dangerously complex and brittle. ▪ It's only going to be more important to do multitier mapping. To mitigate your risks, you háve to know your tier 2, 3, and so on. ▪ You need, and will need in the future, not only one ESG tool. The minute you want to broaden and deepen your #ESG #data, you need specialty tools that can connect with each other. ▪ It's very important to start with a gap analysis. What are the emerging expectations for value chain transparency? And where are the gaps in your existing controls to meet future requirements? If you haven't done so yet, 2024 is the year to start building on your digitally-driven trustworthy sustainable supply chains. Regulation is driving action. We can help you out, don't hesitate to schedule a call: https://lnkd.in/eNDJ7RSg Gartner for Supply Chain #Gartner #Gartnersymposium #supplychainsymposium #reachout #ImpactBuying

With the EUDR, the EU has not given clarity on all issues yet, but companies have to start with the collection of relevant EUDR data in order to report by the 30th of December this year. We came together to share experiences and learn from (inter)national experts on the topic from different constituencies during our hybrid EUDR Soundboard Meeting. We were honored that Jouke Knol from the Ministerie van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit informed the audience about the implementation in the Netherlands and the general enforcement to be expected. Next to that, Jonas Sødergran from Google Cloud and Ruediger Hagedorn from The Consumer Goods Forum presented the CGF project with Google & ImpactBuying, that collects verified data at scale to companies. We as ImpactBuying want to ensure maximum collaboration with existing data platforms and sources to crack the nut on deforestation. That is why we were also honored to have Niels Wielaard, CEO from Satelligence share more about how GIS data can help and how satellite imagery could be used for different commodities and regions to do accurate verification. Up next was the industry: Liesbeth Kamphuis from Volcafe showed an excellent example how a large coffee trader sourcing in many different ways from many different countries does need a "one size fits all" approach but works with the countries and stakeholders together differently. Paul Damen, CEO from De Heus Voeders shared his view on what the regulation will do with the feed sector and what improvements it will bring. Bert Urlings from Vion Food Group shared an approach from the meat industry. At last, our very own specialists spoke about the role of AI, what the EUDR entails and how ImpactBuying sees verification at scale. There are ways to crack this nut with our tools and verification at scale and we are happy to help you. Do you want to know how ImpactBuying can assist you in your #EUDR journey? Today, the #CSDDD passed the final vote in the European Parliament. A green light to new rules obliging firms to mitigate their negative impact on human rights and the environment. 👏 Despite the watering down of the original version, we welcome this decision as it is a huge step forward for how businesses operate their supply and value chains. Companies have to know and start applying due diligence on their supply chains: ▪ Where are products made and under which circumstances? ▪ What are their risks and impacts associated with the production, trading, shipping and packaging of those products? ▪ Who are all those suppliers in their global supply chains? Companies will need to prevent, end or limit their negative impacts on #humanrights and the #environment. These impacts are for instance: #modernslavery, #childlabor, labor exploitation, loss of #biodiversity, #pollution or destruction of natural heritage. Oh and as a bonus: in the same session, the Parliament also adopted the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation #PPWR. Want to know more about the CSDDD and how ImpactBuying can help you?
