As part of the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program #AAAP, the Netherlands is partnering with the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) to support farmers in becoming more resilient and less vulnerable: farmers are increasingly being confronted with droughts, floodings (water stress) as well as heatwaves due to climate change. Our partner GCA leverages outside support for the “Building Resilience for Food and Nutrition Security” #BREFONS project of the African Development Bank Group in Kenya. Through these projects, farmers like Nancy (on the picture) are better able to innovate, adapt to climate change, and improve farming practices. GCA provides and mobilizes expertise to assess climate risks and to implement adaptation solutions. This enables farmers like Nancy to diversify cropping systems with new crops and varieties. The support that GCA and BREFONS provide, builds on what Nancy already does, knows and wants. GCA facilitates farmers to co-create knowledge as well as experiment with new technologies and crops. Nancy, for example, uses intercropping of sorghum and millet: the sorghum is planted for the birds to eat. In turn the birds prevent pests by eating the insects, they warn Nancy for dangerous wildlife, and even enable her to forecast the weather. Because of the sorghum, the millet is not eaten by the birds and is for Nancy and her family. In addition, millet is better adapted to dry hot conditions and lower rainfall. This is just a small example of her (ecological) knowledge and wisdom that contributes greatly to resilient farming at the local level. By taking the capacities of Nancy as a foundation, the project integrates its outside resources into the local context. Nancy’s leadership increases the chance that after the project terminates the results will be sustained over time. #foodsecurity #watersecurity #climateadaptation #resilience Global Center on Adaptation - African Development Bank Group - Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken - Laurent Umans

Our Water Envoy Meike van Ginneken attended the United Nations High Level Political Forum this week. At the #SDG6 event, the UN launched their first System-wide Strategy for Water and Sanitation (UNSWS), one of the key outcomes of the UN 2023 Water Conference that the Netherlands co-hosted with Tajikistan. The Netherlands supports the #UNSWS and looks forward to its implementation. "We need to redouble our water action to keep the SDGs within reach. Water connects us all.” - Meike van Ginneken The goal of the UN SWS is to enhance UN system-wide coordination and delivery of water and sanitation priorities in support of countries to accelerate progress on national plans and priorities, internationally agreed water-related goals and targets, realization of #humanrights, and transformative solutions to current and future challenges for the benefit of all people and the planet. 🔗 Learn more about the UN System-wide Strategy Water and Sanitation: https://lnkd.in/ghahP8s4 United Nations Water United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat

In Ghana, approximately one-third of the high forest and transitional zones are susceptible to annual #wildfires, causing significant damage to resources and livelihoods. Local communities often utilize #fire 🔥 in their daily activities for various purposes such as clearing land for agriculture, hunting, and charcoal production. Instead of changing practices when it comes to wildfires, 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦. Tropenbos International together with Tropenbos Ghana has collaborated with Ghana National Fire Service, communities and other national organizations to increase awareness and provide training on fire prevention and management strategies: ✅ educating farmers, hunters, and charcoal burners on practices to minimize the likelihood of wildfires; ✅ establishing fire volunteer squads within communities; ✅ working closely with fire brigades, police, and government agencies; and ✅ educate young people in schools about the importance of fire prevention. The results of these actions are already making a difference in the Juaboso-Bia, Sefwi-Wiawso, Atebubu and Kintampo landscapes, in Ghana. In 2023, around 400 community fire volunteers were trained, and district and regional fire management committees were formed. These efforts, and the effective coordination between Tropenbos Ghana, Ghana National Fire Service, district assemblies, traditional authorities and local communities has reduced the incidence of wildfires from 1,050 reported cases in 2022 to 513 cases in 2023. To learn more about our work in Ghana, we invite you to watch the video and see how together with communities, we can reduce wildfire risk to save our forest, local livelihoods and lives.
