A powerful example of the impact of inclusion in action is the story of Amaati, a company that has revolutionized the fonio value chain in Africa. Salma Abdulai, Co-Founder and CEO of AMAATI CO. LTD, revealed, ‘The biggest impact created is the over 22,000 jobs that Amaati has created in the fonio value chain, and that alone can be valued at over $200,000 in two years.’ What began with just 10 landowners has now expanded to over 5,000 smallholder women farmers and 1,600 men farmers. Inclusion is the engine that drives food systems transformation. By involving youth and women in key agricultural value chains, we’re not just fostering economic growth; we’re reshaping the very fabric of Africa’s food systems. As we convene at AFS Forum, let’s explore how these inclusive strategies can be scaled and replicated across the continent, accelerating the transformation of our food systems for the benefit of youth and women. #Amaati #AFS #SustainableTrade #MarketTransforation #SME https://lnkd.in/eXrUdDhM

At African Food Systems Forum, we’ll delve into how intra-African trade can be a game-changer for the African continent. By boosting trade within #Africa, we can enhance food security, reduce waste, and drive economic growth. Strengthening intra-African trade not only creates a more robust and self-reliant food system but also mitigates the impact of global disruptions. Kebba Colley, Value Chain Transformation Global Director at IDH, advocates for a transformative approach to domestic food value chains. The upcoming African Food Systems Forum in September 2024 will focus on the transformative work happening across Africa’s food systems. One of the impactful projects highlighted during the event will be the Developing Inclusive Grain Value Chains in hashtag #Nigeria (DIGVCN). This project, a collaboration between IDH, Nestlé, and TechnoServe, has significantly improved the livelihoods of over 22,000 smallholder farmers by providing essential training, facilitating access to finance, and enhancing market opportunities. With achievements like €7.7 million in input credit, the creation of over 262,000 jobs, and the widespread adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, the project has made strides in strengthening the grain value chain and fostering economic growth. The Forum will offer an opportunity to delve into these successes, exploring how similar approaches can be scaled and adapted across different regions to build a more resilient and inclusive food system throughout Africa. IDH Ghana and the Horticulture Business Platform (HBP), under the Ghana Netherlands Business & Culture Council (GNBCC), convened over 250 stakeholders for a four-day horticultural market event. This event is part of the national horticultural sector transformation under the Grains for Growth (G4G) Plus program, a partnership between IDH Ghana, the Mastercard Foundation, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana, and HBP. The program aims to address supply chain gaps and foster collaboration in Ghana’s grains and #horticultural sectors. The event gathered small-scale producers, trade association executives, Market Queens, supply chain actors, and government representatives, including officials from the Ministries of Food and Agriculture, Trade and Industry, and various regulatory bodies. Private sector participants included Kivo Ghana, Sankofa Spices, and the Ghana Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association. Key discussions focused on bridging local supply gaps, enhancing import substitution, and improving food security through collaboration. IDH Ghana Country Director, Robert Asugre, emphasized: “There are challenges in this sector, but also potential for creating shared value. This conference aims to find powerful solutions to empower the sector's growth.” Dutch Agriculture Counsellor, Inge Tenniglo, highlighted the Netherlands' support for Ghana's horticulture and urged stakeholders to make the sector more attractive to youth. “Horticulture plays a significant role in economic growth, with the sector growing at 10%. Improved diets are essential, as vegetable consumption in Ghana is about half the recommended amount.” Mastercard Foundation Agriculture Lead, Daniel Ninson, expressed satisfaction with the event: “The discussions were insightful, aligning with our goals to identify opportunities for youth in the sector. We look forward to further engagement and support to advance livelihoods and food security.” The event concluded with a joint action plan to develop a sourcing and supply roadmap, validated and piloted by stakeholders. IDH will facilitate collaborations and investments in irrigation, quality seeds, technology, market structures, and standardization. Stakeholders also called for increased government support to meet international standards. #Ghana #valuechains #SustainableTrade

🤝In 2019, our business analytics team partnered with Union Service Stores Limited (USSL) in Tanzania to develop a smallholder-inclusive sourcing model for the maize value chain, reducing the company’s reliance on traders. 5 years later, our team assessed the impact of integrating their recommendations, and the results are inspiring: smallholder incomes have significantly increased, surpassing initial projections, and maize production volumes have increased. Despite higher production costs due to local fertilizer price hikes triggered by the Russian-Ukrainian war, the positive impact on smallholders and the company itself are great to see. Curious to learn more about the transformative impact on Union Service Stores? Check out the comprehensive report here!
