📢Call for proposals! We are looking for a consultant to help design, structure, and fundraise for a Latin American Climate Resilient Coffee Facility starting from the assessment of farmer needs to climate-proof their farms. Climate-smart financing is high on our agenda. IDH seeks to develop financing solutions by designing the Latin America Coffee Resilience Facility to advance climate-smart financing for smallholders while furthering the climate agendas of the coffee sector players. Companies across the coffee supply chain have made public commitments to achieve 50% decarbonisation targets by 2030 and Net-Zero Emissions by 2050, as well as drastically reduce their water withdrawals. The journey to becoming resource-positive is fraught with many challenges: on the demand side, the smallholders often lack awareness, know-how, and financial resources to uptake the critical interventions to climate-proof their farms. On the supply side, farmer financing remains scarce: too risky for financial institutions, and not the core business of coffee traders or brands. IDH Invest is designing a solution to close these gaps and is hiring a Consultant to support us in developing LATTE. Interested? Read the full Terms of Reference and submit your application: https://lnkd.in/eFq7FX72 👉 Submissions deadline: 21 October 2024, COB. #AccessToFinance #ClimateSmart #ClimateResilience #Coffee #Opportunity

Climate change is impacting smallholder farmers globally, affecting yields, incomes, and natural resources. At the same time, agriculture is a significant emitter of greenhouse gases. How can cotton farming be part of the solution? This World Cotton Day, we’re highlighting the power of climate-resilient agriculture in cotton farming. By reducing water use, enhancing soil health, and adopting sustainable practices, we are shaping a future where cotton farming protects both livelihoods and the planet. From India to Brazil, Chad, and Pakistan, cotton farmers are on the frontlines of climate change, adopting innovative practices like regenerative agriculture to safeguard the environment while ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability. Let’s celebrate the role of cotton in creating a more sustainable world. Join us in recognising the innovation and resilience that is driving the cotton sector forward. #Worldcottonday2024 #Cottonforgood #RegenerativeAgriculture #Climateresilience #sustainablecotton

📣 Call for proposals! We are looking for a consultant to conduct research on investors’ risk perception regarding investments in smallholder farmer value chains. 💡 Interested? Continue reading or go directly to the webpage to read the full Terms of Reference and submit your application. 👉 Submissions deadline: 15 October 2024, COB. IDH accelerates and up-scales sustainable trade by building impact-oriented coalitions of front running companies, civil society, governments, knowledge institutions and other stakeholders in several commodity sectors. To build on IDH's track record in smallholder value chains, the IDH Farmfit Fund (part of IDH Invest) was established in 2020 to continue and develop the innovative finance approach. The Fund manages EUR 100 M, which the Dutch government and several large multinational companies have committed to invest in. The Fund’s aims to change the agricultural finance system for the benefit of smallholders, with the ultimate goal of establishing smallholder finance as an asset class. A central aspect of the Fund’s strategy is the impact of “real” and perceived risks on investments in smallholder farmer value chains. To address actual risks, such as low economic development and climate change, the Fund deploys capital to de-risk innovative investments in smallholder farmer value chains, encouraging investors to co-invest with the Fund. Beyond real risks, the Fund hypothesises that the perceived risk of investments in smallholder farmer value chains is greater than the real risks, resulting in insufficient and suboptimal investments in the sector. To address the perceived risk, the Fund aims build a sizeable, financially sound smallholder farmer-centric investment portfolio of proven innovative business models and financing mechanisms that will demonstrate the viability of financially sustainable farmer financing. IDH, for the purpose of the Farmfit Fund, is therefore looking for a consultant to conduct research on and develop a written report about investors’ risk perception regarding investments in smallholder farmer value chains. Did you know that up to 50% of crop production in sub-Saharan Africa is lost before it even reaches consumers? Inadequate infrastructure and inefficient logistics still prevent many farmers from accessing lucrative consumer markets. As a result, 1/3 of global food is lost or wasted, contributing to 8-10% of greenhouse gas emissions. One inspiring solution? Rwanda’s reefer container trial shipments of avocados. These innovative trials used sea freight as a cost-effective alternative to air transport, opening up new markets and reducing food loss. In partnership with Flying Swans, A.P. Moller - Maersk SOUK FARMS and IDH, the trials achieved lower transportation costs, higher prices for over 1,200 smallholder farmers, 90% reduction in the carbon footprint of avocado exports and market access beyond Europe & the Middle East. This is a powerful example of how smart agrologistics and advanced technologies can transform not only economies but also the environment and livelihoods. Let’s invest in robust logistics systems and cold chain management to make food systems more sustainable and inclusive. IDH welcomes the decision by the European Commission to phase in the EUDR and ensure inclusive compliance. This is a wise response to the risk of smallholder farmer exclusion, which should not significantly increase deforestation risk as the core of the regulation will remain unchanged. It’s now time for commodity buyers and producer governments to accelerate their collaboration to improve forest monitoring and enforcement. We know from experience in the last year (see examples below) that it is possible to achieve inclusive compliance and for the #EUDR to help drive down deforestation across non-European markets, but it will require more investment in smallholder farmer registration and more collaboration on data sharing. We remain fully committed with our partners in key sourcing regions to support the effective and inclusive implementation of this important regulation. 👉Read our paper with solutions on how to implement the regulation: https://lnkd.in/e2hkhnvP https://lnkd.in/dywTvCTx

Gender empowerment is at the heart of IDH's approach to sustainable trade. We are committed to empowering women across sectors, aiming to create opportunities that support their growth and well-being. In Kenya, together with our partners, Generation Kenya and the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, we are working towards empowering Kenya’s Women in the Textile and Apparel Industry -- a key driver of Kenya’s economic growth. The sector supports more than 250,000 jobs indirectly, with women making up over 70% of the workforce. While women are not explicitly excluded from the manufacturing industry, they remain underrepresented and undervalued. Our IN Sustainable Textile and Apparel Parks (INSTEP) programme is empowering women by creating safer, more inclusive workplaces. Through tailored skills development, essential mental health support, and initiatives that foster sustainable practices while addressing gender-based violence, INSTEP is committed to driving meaningful change in the industry.
