Risk comes from not knowing what you're doing' Warren Buffett Had the privilege to Look, Learn and Listen at the European Society of Cardiology(ESC) Conference in London this month and that phrase resonates extremely well. It was great to attend and share the experience with TNO Healthy Living Annika van Rosmalen, Willem van den Brink, Charlotte Berendsen, the Holst Centre family Adam Badar, PhD, Panditha P., Thiru Kanagasabapathi and Denny Mathew 🔷 We are definitely entering the digital age for smart medical wearable technology but to do so effectively we need a multidisciplinary approach. If I had to choose 3 take home-points from the conference (extremely hard to do!). They fall into three categories for me: 🔊 Are we there yet? NO but we are definitely on the road Atrial fibrillation is set to double from 2010 to 2060, with lifetime risk going from 1 in 5 to 1 in 3 for the population [2024 ESC Guidelines] With the growing number of smart watches available, we as a group are getting more involved with our health. The majority of doctors present indicated that patients are coming to them with information on their health in between visits. This is great news for improving our understanding of cardiac disease, with more personalized information present. -->Wearable technology and the cardiovascular system: the future of patient assessment - The Lancet Digital Health https://lnkd.in/evY_AQeE -->Comparison of 2 Smart Watch Algorithms for Detection of Atrial Fibrillation and the Benefit of Clinician Interpretation: SMART WARS Study | JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology https://lnkd.in/eDNQ5Wgp 🔊 There is not one solution It was repeated quite a bit that there is a clear overlap between blood pressure and arrythmia detection. Whereby both are needed for improved cardiac treatment. The use of multi-vital sign monitoring would provide a strong tool for clinical confidence. Personalized monitoring should also be looked into further for the clear variation between males and females! Integration of sex and gender in cardiovascular medicine: a scientific and clinical imperative - PMC (nih.gov) https://lnkd.in/e29hZCiB 🔊 Phil Collins was correct when he asked if we can feel it coming in the air tonight Pollution is impacting quality of life in so many ways. A review from the Lancet provided extremely strong statements, 'The Impact of pollution on health remains much greater than that of war, terrorism, malaria, HIV, tubercolosis, drugs and alcohol, and the number of deaths caused by pollution are on par with those caused by smoking'' Lancet Commission 2022 Air pollution and cardiovascular disease onset: hours, days, or years? - The Lancet Public Health https://lnkd.in/eiN2w3T9 #ESC2024 #HolstCentre #TNO #MedicalWearables
