What a difference a space makes! Where the #ShapingFeministForeignPolicy conference in Mexico saw a female majority (and some male allies), the first #prepmeeting of the Financing for Development #FFD4 could do with more female voices at the table and more #genderequality on the menu! With Chido Nyaruwata, one of the Walkie-Talkies of #WalkingtheTalk we are in #AddisAbaba this week. The first two days were all about setting the scene: expectations of countries, international organizations and (too) few civil society voices about the year long preparations leading up to the #FFD4 conference to be held in Sevilla in July 2025. The clearest messages: 1. Accelerate financial investments into #SDGs as only 17% are on track and we have an annual financial gap of 2.5 to 4 trillion USD. 2. Transforming the international financial architecture, especially when it comes to issues of debt (and the role of Multilateral Development Banks), voice and agency of Majority World countries. 3. While ODA remains a relevant tool (and Majority World countries reminded Global North of the 0.7% commitment), there is a shift to more blended finance (particularly to address the climate crisis), private sector investments, domestic resource mobilization and innovative financing. And how did #genderequality, #CSOparticipation and #youthpower fare? Not so well, only a few country delegations mentioned specific commitments and expectations around these issues and/or meaningful participation. And sometimes silence spoke louder, like in the case of my own country #theNetherlands, a leader on gender equality, not even mentioning it at all! And this is despite common knowledge, reiterated once again by the Deputy Minister for International Development of #Norway @Bjorg Sandkjaer that the best strategy for wealth creation is an investment in #womenandgirls! We have got our work cut out for us! Let's do this...
