Over ons
Mission: Hivos works for a world where people can realize their full potential, unleashing their ingenuity and creativity to build fair, just and life-sustaining societies for themselves and generations to come. Our mission is to amplify and connect voices that promote social and environmental justice and challenge power imbalances. We particularly empower marginalized rightsholders to raise their voice and demand freedom of choice. Hivos supports the development of alternative solutions to deep-seated problems so that individuals and communities can make responsible and equitable choices within political and economic systems that serve their needs and preserve the planet. We connect people and organizations offering alternatives to those looking for solutions in their fight for social and environmental justice. Vision: Hivos firmly believes in every person’s right to live in freedom and dignity, to enjoy equal opportunities, and to influence decisions made regarding the changes they want to see in their lives, communities and country. We envision a world in which individual differences and backgrounds are respected and used to strengthen communities. A world in which people join forces to challenge the power imbalances that allow environmental degradation and propel climate change; that condone exploitation, oppression and exclusion; and that perpetuate gender inequalities. Core values: We believe that human life in its many forms is valuable. All people deserve to achieve their full potential, but are also responsible for sustaining the environment. Living in freedom and dignity with respect for others and the planet leads to individual well-being and fair, vibrant societies. • Freedom & dignity • Responsible citizenship • Self-determination & diversity • Equality & justice • Sustainable use of our planet’s resources Our three impact areas: • Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion • Climate Justice • Civic Rights in a Digital Age

Brazil is ablaze – once again. This year, fires have engulfed the natural environment and ravaged people’s homes from the #Amazon rain forest all the way up to the Pantanal – the country's largest tropical wetland. We talked to Paula Franco Moreira, who runs our Voices for Just Climate Action program in Brazil, about this summer’s record-breaking wildfires in the country. “As always, it’s the most vulnerable communities that are hit hardest.” #ClimateJustice

All eyes will be on Baku in November as it hosts #COP29. Hivos’ Collins Otieno, Climate Finance and Innovations Officer, wrote an op-ed for NationAfrica where he discusses the urgent need for political leaders to prioritize the #GlobalClimateEmergency over national interests and short-term gains. The upcoming COP 29 conference has the challenge of addressing ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to meet the Paris Agreement’s goals of limiting global warming while also pushing for bold actions, sustained emission reductions, and ensuring that no one is left behind. Approximately two thirds of women in #Nigeria have experienced violence from an intimate partner. In a new campaign, #MakeHalla Against Domestic Violence, #WeLead mobilizes communities to fight #DomesticViolence by encouraging survivors to speak out and seek justice. Halla means to raise one’s voice or scream and shout in Nigerian Pidgin. Nigerian actors Ali Nuhu and Charles Inojie star in short and powerful clips which demonstrate how communities can stand up to domestic violence. Through grassroots engagement and #communityleadership, the initiative aims to challenge societal norms that tolerate abuse and empower victims to reclaim their voices. The first results of the campaign look promising. In surveys before and after the campaign, we saw a 14 percent increase in likelihood that respondents would show their disapproval when they were aware domestic violence was taking place. Read more about the Make Halla campaign here: https://lnkd.in/gvu2wcSG The co-creation process of the campaign was supported by We Lead’s technical partner M&C Saatchi World Services.

“We are seeing a revolution. It’s like a new generation that is being born to stand up for themselves.” Women are the backbone of #rural communities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia but they are at risk of being subject to #GenderDisparities: lack of access to land and finance, severe weather patterns, and gender-based violence. But when women have access to the tools they need, they can create change for themselves, their families, and their entire community. The #RuralWomenCultivatingChange (RWCC) project employs multiple methods of dismantling the patriarchal system. By supporting women with training on seed preservation, farming knowledge and techniques, and connecting them to #grassroots organizations, they are developing tools for empowerment and the necessary knowledge to tackle the harsh impacts of #ClimateChange. Watch the short documentary and learn more about the RWCC program here: https://lnkd.in/gNrhQK_U
