𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸 #𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗗𝗮𝘆𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆? 🌍⚓ Yesterday, we had the honour of hosting 20 MSc in Shipping University of Piraeus students from the University of Piraeus, accompanied by three of their professors - Maria Boile, Fani Sakellariadou, Stefanos Chatzinikolaou  and a staff member, Alexandra Itani. The excursion started with a guided boat tour to explore the Port of Rotterdam, led by Green Award Foundation Executive Director, Jan Fransen and Certification Manager, Keita Shinohara. Even more exciting, the boat we boarded, Rederij Thalassa, recently became a Green Award Binnenvaart gold certificate holder 🏅 after a thorough renovation of its engine room. We made a stop at RDM Rotterdam, a hotspot for innovation in the Rotterdam port area and there, we gave a presentation on what makes our hearts beat at Green Award Foundation 💚 and exchanged learning and experiences. As we continue to reflect on ways to make the maritime industry safer, cleaner, and more sustainable on a special day like today, this is just a reminder that the future is today. 🌍 MSc in Shipping University of Piraeus Annual Educational Trip: Exploring the Netherlands 🇳🇱 The 2024 edition of our highly anticipated annual educational trip took our students to the heart of maritime innovation and sustainability in the Netherlands! After the US 2022 and Egypt 2023 trips, under the guidance and organisation of our Director, Prof. Maria Boile, this year's journey provided our students an enriching experience, exploring key European maritime sites. 🌊🚢 One of the standout moments was visiting Rotterdam’s iconic Euromast Tower, where we were honored to receive a guided tour from the Executive Director of the Green Award Foundation, Mr. Jan Fransen 🌱. Students also delved into the science of water management at the Het Keringhuis Publiekscentrum Water and learned about the remarkable engineering behind the Maeslantkering flood barrier. Lastly, we explored the Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), gaining firsthand insights into its crucial role in port and maritime safety in managing the world's busiest port 🚢. This trip provided an incredible opportunity to deepen our understanding of sustainable shipping and maritime safety, essential for the future leaders of the industry. This is just the beginning! SOLAS was first adopted in 1914 following the sinking of the Titanic, which exposed significant gaps in maritime safety. Over the years, several versions of SOLAS have been introduced to address evolving risks. By 1974, advancements in ship technology and increased international trade necessitated a comprehensive update, leading to the modern SOLAS Convention we rely on today. 20 years later, in 1994, members of the board of the Port of Rotterdam, keen on improving ship performance, established the Green Award Foundation 🌱 to incentivize and certify ships going above and beyond in terms of safety and environmental protection. SOLAS is special because it lays the foundation for global maritime safety 🌍, requiring shipbuilders, operators, and regulators to prioritize human lives and environmental protection🚢.
