Building the Network to Defeat the Network of Scams
Over ons
Our mission is to protect consumers worldwide from scams by raising awareness, enabling hand-on tools for consumers and law enforcement, facilitating knowledge sharing, organizing research, supporting the development of (legal) best practices, and offering training and education. The number of online scams is booming. $1.026 trillion was lost by consumers to scams in 2023. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg as only 7% of all victims report the online scam to the police. Still, in most developed countries 20 to 40% of all reported crime is now related to online fraud. Scammers, however, can go free because they can operate globally, while law enforcement operations locally, regionally, or nationally. According to the World Economic Forum, only 0.05% of all cybercriminals are prosecuted.

🌟 We have a new entry in the GASA Best Practices Database: Project Chegando Junto - Boosting Scam Prevention in Brazil 🌟 🔍 Project Overview: Ministério Público do Estado de Minas Gerais (Public Ministry of the State of Minas Gerais or MPMG) has joined launched the Chegando Junto Project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing scam prevention in Brazil. This project effectively weaponizes the Google Ads and search engine to counter online scams and protect citizens, by intercepting the potential victim when they search for a commonly impersonated product, such as a loan or auction. This article was written jointly by Rafael Fernandes (MPMG & GASA Brazil), Anna Flávia Lehman, Sandra Helena Barbosa de Andrade (MPMG), and Sam Rogers (GASA). Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eSySpZy8 📉 Addressing Economic Vulnerability: The project shines a spotlight on the rampant exploitation of ordinary Brazilian people, like Mr. Rosa dos Anjos, who lost his savings to a fake auction scam. This personal story highlights the broader issue of economic vulnerability that many citizens face, making them easy targets for fraud. 💡 Innovative Campaigns: The Chegando Junto Project has launched targeted digital campaigns to raise awareness and prevent scams. Using Google Ads, the MPMG reached tens of thousands of people with anti-fraud messages, significantly increasing the visibility and impact of their educational materials. 🏆 Recognition and Future Plans: Recognized at the 2023 Global Anti-Scam Summit in Lisbon as a leading global scam prevention initiative, the Chegando Junto Project is set to expand with increased funding and new campaigns. MPMG’s commitment to this cause demonstrates their dedication to building effective and responsible institutions in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 16. #ScamPrevention #ChegandoJunto #GASA #MinasGerais #Brazil #UnitedNations #FraudPrevention #Empowerment #GoogleSearch

Abigail Bishop, Head of External Relations, Scam Prevention at Amazon led a workshop focusing on strategies to keep fraud off platforms at the Global Anti-Scam Summit (GASS). The workshop highlighted the importance of a comprehensive, collaborative approach to combat online fraud and scams. Watch Abigail's 3-minute report back to the main delegation: https://lnkd.in/eX4nXg4A Five Key Takeaways: Diverse Nature of Platforms: Platforms are not a one-size-fits-all term; they offer different products and services, leading to varied scam experiences for customers. Continuous Efforts Against Scammers: Despite effective controls, scammers persist in their attempts, highlighting the need for advanced machine learning and AI to manage and sort the vast amounts of data. Essential Role of Humans: Human involvement remains crucial in the fight against fraud, complementing AI and machine learning solutions. Focus Amidst Noise: The solution space is noisy; finding focused and promising efforts, such as ad certification services and strict sanctions against bad actors, is key. Consumer-Centric Approach: It is vital for platforms to listen to consumers and keep a pulse on their needs and experiences to ensure effective scam prevention measures. Workshop Contributors included: Angeliki Dedopoulou (Meta): Discussed the need for a whole-of-society approach to fraud and scams. Martin Grasel & Bernhard Jungwirth (C4 - Criminal Intelligence Service Austria & Austrian Institute for Applied Telecommunications (OIAT): Covered measures to tackle advertising fraud. 📢 New Regulation on Fund Transfers and Crypto-Assets as European Banking Authority (EBA) issues final travel rule guidance. Regulation (EU) 2023/1113, which was published on June 9, 2023, marks a significant milestone in the fight against terrorist financing and financial crime. This new regulation recasts the previous Regulation (EU) 2015/847 and extends its scope to include certain crypto-assets, enhancing our collective ability to trace and prevent illicit activities. 🔍 Key Highlights: Scope Extension: The regulation now includes the transfer of certain crypto-assets. Objective: To make it more difficult to abuse funds and crypto-asset transfers for terrorist financing and other financial crimes, while enabling authorities to trace such transfers effectively. Guidelines: The European Banking Authority (EBA) is mandated to issue guidelines for Payment Service Providers (PSPs), Intermediary PSPs (IPSPs), Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASPs), and Intermediary CASPs (ICASPs) on detecting and managing transfers with missing or incomplete information. The EBA will replace the 2017 Joint European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) Guidelines with new directives, maintaining a risk-based approach that allows PSPs, IPSPs, CASPs, and ICASPs to tailor their compliance efforts to the nature and size of their business and the ML/TF risk they face. Competent authorities will use these guidelines to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of the procedures implemented by PSPs, IPSPs, CASPs, and ICASPs in complying with the new regulation.
