Looking back at a fun event at the exhibition Strength Away From Home, on view at Galerie Mercatorplein in Amsterdam West until 8 July: https://lnkd.in/eYAn-67S Participants experimented with Polaroid cameras during a photography workshop by Coco Olakunle and joined in many sports activities by athletes Soraya Verhoeve (Ajax) and Muna Dahouk (Olympic Refugee Team). Strength Away From Home is initiated in collaboration with KLABU, an Amsterdam-based non-profit organisation that supports refugees through sports, reflecting upon the courage and resilience shown by millions of refugees worldwide who have been torn from their familiar environment and forced to build a new life away from home. The exhibition shows the work of photographer Coco Olakunle which aims to break through existing stereotypes and shift the visual narrative surrounding refugees, empowering their personal voices. Special thanks to SEA Water™ and innocent drinks for the refreshing beverages. Unity Day for World Refugee Week 2024 © Foam. This week in Creative Review: “The name of Paolo Cirio’s new exhibition, AI Attacks, is knowingly ambiguous. Is he attacking AI, or is it attacking us? In reality, it’s somewhere in between. Presented at Foam in Amsterdam, the exhibition brings together four of his projects – including one new work – that collectively unpick AI and how it’s leveraged against individuals and societies. He does this with challenging, provocative works that span photography, text, moving image, and, yes, generative AI.” The exhibition AI Attacks by Paolo CIRIO is a part of the multidimensional project Photography through the Lens of AI. On view at Foam until 25 August. Full article available via: https://lnkd.in/eBYX7VV4

New at Foam: Young Human by ShuShu Sieberns. On view until 25 August 2024. More info via: https://lnkd.in/eYXR8Dvz The Young Human by ShuShu Sieberns serves as a sensitive exploration of the internal conflict that the artist experiences in the relationship between her deeply religious grandmother and her partner. In the exhibition, ShuShu tries to create a bridge between two different worlds: one where queer identity and traditional Russian family values can coexist alongside each other.

AI and photography represent significant technological advancements within society, that shape our relationship with reality and truth. In the larger conversation around AI images, it is important to raise critical questions about authorship, originality, and the role of the artist in the creative act. However, when used as an artistic tool these technologies also expand the boundaries of what is possible and spark interesting debates about what 'art' means in the first place and what it's role in society is. Read more about what Katy Hundertmark, Managing Editor of Foam Magazine, and Claartje van Dijk, Senior Curator, shared with DAZED Magazine in the feature about the intersection between AI, art and society in light of Foam's multidimensional project Photography through the Lens of AI: https://lnkd.in/ehjAJZys
