🍎Juicy times This year, we adopted some apple trees for the Flying Fish team. And with a fruitful result, because yesterday we had a great harvest. A highly recommended team activity! Not only did we reflect on the growth of the apples, but we also looked back on the growth of Flying Fish since 2019, and looked forward to many exciting sustainable maritime projects ahead. Want to have a taste of it? You're warmly invited for an apple and coffee at our office. With Tim Visser, Gijsbert van Marrewijk, Casper Vertregt, Daphne V., Gerben Schonebaum, Chiel Bruin, Max Timmerman and Levien Bareman

Engineering a sustainable maritime future with hydrofoil systems, zero-emission propulsion and fleet optimization.

🌞🛳️Present at the official opening drinks of the Rotterdam World Port Days. The organization highly recommends visiting the Hydrogen Pavilion (het waterstofpaviljoen). I can only support that: my colleagues Chiel Bruin, Casper Vertregt and Tim Visser from Flying Fish will also stand there with the SWIM hydrogen-electric watertaxi! Make sure to visit this weekend at the Holland-Amerikakade.

🙋♂️Meet Gijs: A Dedicated Senior Systems Engineer at Flying Fish The most important part of Flying Fish is our team. These weeks we are introducing some of our Flying Fish colleagues to you to give you an insight in their daily work. This time, we interviewed our colleague Gijs Bruining.  In his free time, Gijs spends a lot of time programming, working on mechanical hobby designs, and electronics design. During holidays, Gijs loves sailing in Friesland. 🧑🔧⛵ As Senior Systems Engineer he is involved in designing and testing, but he also takes on a guiding and coordinating role within the team. On working at Flying Fish Gijs says: “We are a driven group, not just in creating great technical solutions, but in valuing the human aspect of business and collaboration. We listen to each other, which provides a sustainable foundation to build upon”. 🔹What does a typical day look like for you? "My day always starts with a cup of coffee and a quick check of my inbox, so I can hopefully keep it closed for the rest of the day. Then it's time for our stand-up meeting to discuss the day's plans with the team. After that, I dive into my work! My days vary greatly – sometimes I spend the entire day in the workshop, other days are filled with planning and meetings, and if I’m lucky, I get to visit clients."   🔹What do you enjoy most about your work? "I love everything related to the design process – the continuous journey of discovery I embark on with my colleagues. I also enjoy inspiring and helping others to develop their skills."   🔹What skills or talents are essential for this job? "It's incredibly helpful if you find joy and satisfaction in the design process, problem-solving, and testing (and thus improving) systems." 🔹What memorable day or moment will you never forget? "We put a tremendous amount of work into designing and integrating the hydrogen-powered water taxi, partially completed in Delft for logistical reasons. When the electrical system was ready, we decided to sail the MSTX22 to Watertaxi in Rotterdam as a team. It was an incredibly fun trip and felt like a huge victory arriving in Rotterdam."   Connect with Gijs to discover more about his projects at Flying Fish! 🌟 #Team #Engineering #Flying #Fish #Maritime #Solutions #Innovator #Hydrofoils #Propulsion

🌊 Newsflash: Our HOST Hydrofoil Simulator has been validated in waves! We're proud to share that our hydrofoil force simulation model has been validated with data we collected at MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) a while ago. The simulator is now running with impressive accuracy in real-time. This is a practical win for anyone involved in designing, testing or optimizing hydrofoil boats. Check out the video to learn more. Why is this important? Our dynamics simulation model helps us to accurately predict the forces and motions on hydrofoil boats, allowing for real-time adjustments and fine-tuning. Whether you're in the design phase or improving a prototype, our model helps you save time, reduce costs, and stay on track. What this means for you: 🛥️Accurate Data: Trustworthy predictions on lift, drag, and stability before you make a design and hit the water ⏱️Real-Time Adjustments: Make changes during virtual testing and optimize performance while flying your hydrofoil design. 😀Focus on What Matters: We handle the complex flight calculations and hydrofoil optimization, so you can concentrate on making a great boat for your customer The data was collected by Casper Vertregt during a towing tank test at MARIN, where he could also demonstrate our approach to Bas Buchner. This validation is a practical step forward in understanding and improving hydrofoil technology in a lean way. Get in touch with us to push your projects further. #Hydrofoil #Simulation #Engineering #RealTimeData #Technology #Validation #Lean #Towing #Tank

🙋♂️ Meet Max: An Enthusiastic Software Developer at Flying Fish The most important part of Flying Fish is our team. Over the next few weeks, we'll be introducing some of our Flying Fish colleagues to give you an insight into their daily work. This time, we interviewed our colleague Max. After starting at Flying Fish through a work experience placement, Max officially joined our team as a Software Developer. His main focus is on Front End Development. In his free time, Max loves spending time outdoors, walking with his partner and dog, and gardening. 🌳🐕🦺 🔹Hey Max, what did the work experience placement mean for you? Max: “It has given me a kickstart in learning the basics of programming with the help of my colleagues. I am still grateful for this opportunity.” 🔹What does a typical day look like for you? "We start our day with a team stand-up. During this brief meeting, everyone shares what they worked on the previous day, their plans for today, and if they need any help from a colleague. After the stand-up, we dive into our tasks. 🔹What do you enjoy most about your work? "Programming is still relatively new to me, so I learn something new almost every day. I love seeing the practical impact of my work, like the layout of the app and emails for Watertaxi Rotterdam. Living in Rotterdam, I feel a sense of pride every time I see the black and yellow boats. Besides that, I truly love contributing to a green future. It feels incredibly rewarding." 🔹What skills or talents are essential for someone in this job? "As a developer, it's a given you need programming knowledge, but it's not the most crucial aspect. This field is all about continuous development. Perseverance and a healthy dose of curiosity to learn new things are key. Working in a relatively small team means we have direct communication lines and a collaborative environment." 🔹What memorable day or moment will you never forget? "The team outing where we went e-foiling was a blast! Flying Fish is a small company, so you get to know your colleagues well. It's a culture where everyone can be themselves, and there's a strong emphasis on the well-being of colleagues, not just on business results. We regularly enjoy fun activities together, and there's always plenty of laughter during a typical workday." Witness the smooth and efficient sailing of the TU Delft Hydro Motion Team's hydrofoiling boat, sponsored by Flying Fish! 😎 Last week, this talented team made history by becoming the first to sail from the Netherlands to England on hydrogen power. Before their groundbreaking crossing, they captured this stunning footage of their hydrofoiling boat effortlessly gliding through wind and waves. The comparison to the chase boat in the video speaks volumes about the benefits of this foiling design. At Flying Fish, it’s an honor to work with such dedicated students who share our passion for sustainability. We're proud to have contributed to their success, helping them make their boat fly like a magic carpet over waves without losing speed or efficiency. Our engineers, such as Gijs Bruining, played an important role in assisting with the hydrofoil design, control system, electrical troubleshooting, and more. We're also excited to announce that we’ve been advancing this hydrofoil technology to make it rugged and ready for the commercial market. If you're interested in taking your vessel to the next level, contact Gijsbert van Marrewijk to learn how you can fly into the future with us.
