Did you know that 15-minutes of meditation has overlapping effects with a day of vacation? This was shown in a study https://lnkd.in/gzz8XXBH which aim was to directly compare the effects of meditation to vacation, by Christoffer J. May et al. (April 2019). According to the authors no other study that they are aware of has been directly compared the effects of meditation to vacation. Perhaps, as they note, this is because the structural dissimilarities of meditation and vacation do not invite comparisons. Nevertheless, the authors find that it would be informative to discover the relative impact of short meditation sessions practiced in a daily life that is sometimes punctuated by short vacations. However, the authors also note that the relative durability of the effects of meditation and vacation is an empirical question for future research. These relative effects may also depend on the type of meditation practiced and the kind of vacation taken. In this study, 53 participants from a pool of first-year psychology students at a Dutch university and its surroundings were enrolled. The authors examined the relative impact of 15 minutes of meditation compared to a day of vacation over eight weeks of daily life. The results suggest that 15-minutes of meditation has overlapping effects with a day of vacation. Light-hearted proscriptive advice based on this comparison may then be: If you are pressed for time, sit on a meditation cushion; if you have more time, sit on a beach chair. Did you know that Modelflow can be used to track changes in stroke volume during profound orthostatic stress? This was shown in a study https://lnkd.in/eDsfeX3n  which aim was to  compare stroke volume (SV) estimated by Modelflow, as implemented in Finapres devices, and echocardiography, at rest and during orthostatic challenge by Vera-Ellen m Lucci et al. (December 2023). In this study, 13 individuals were tested using combined head-up tilt and graded lower body negative pressure, continued until presyncope. SV was derived by both Modelflow and echocardiography on multiple occasions while supine, during orthostatic stress, and at presyncope.   The results of the study demonstrate that Modelflow can be used to track changes in SV during profound orthostatic stress. Did you know that early ALS diagnosis can lead to a better quality of life in patients with ALS?   This was shown in a study https://lnkd.in/etWw5SVi by Subodh Chapagain et al., July 2023, which aim was to demonstrate that early diagnosis is essential for effective management of the disease.   Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (#ALS) is a disease that affects both upper and lower motor neurons, causing a range of symptoms beyond the motor system. Recent research has shown that the autonomic nervous system can also be affected, with symptoms such as orthostatic hypotension, fluctuations in blood pressure, and dizziness being reported. In this study a 58-year-old male patient was diagnosed with ALS with #dysautonomia and #respiratoryfailure. The authors conclude that further research is needed to fully understand the pathophysiology of dysautonomia in ALS and its impact on disease progression and quality of life.   Finapres® devices are used for monitoring #bloodpressure measurement continuously and non-invasively in research into #dysautonomia and #orthostatichypotension, and is a valuable tool for supporting clinical decision making.   Do you want to learn more about the need for more research into ALS?
