NEW TEAM MEMBERS - We are excited to welcome talented new professionals to the Felixx team! Our office has recently expanded with architects and landscape designers from around the world, enriching our collective expertise and strengthening the trust and collaboration that define our culture.   Amedeo Ardolino, a cum laude graduate from the University of Florence, brings valuable experience from Italy and Belgium, expertly guiding projects from competition to construction permits. Arina Novikova and IChen Hung impressed us during our Open Office Day 2024, showcasing their determination and skills, which led us to trust in their potential and welcome them to the team. Idil Yagmur Ozkalkan, with a master’s in Sustainable Architecture and Landscape Design, is eager to create innovative and vibrant spaces that reflect our shared vision. Maria Vittoria Delli Carri joins us as a skilled architect and landscape architect, specializing in sustainable urban design with degrees from University Roma Tre and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Finally, we’re thrilled to welcome Yayun Gao back as a landscape designer. Her positive internship experience solidified our belief in her capabilities and commitment to our mission. Symposium: The Green City of the Future! 🌿 We look back on a successful and insightful day! Last Thursday, we hosted a #symposium together with PosadMaxwan and Gemeente Almere, bringing policymakers, researchers, and urban planners from Dutch and Belgian cities together. The focus? Sharing ideas and solutions on how to create #naturebased, future-proof inner cities and exploring challenges and opportunities with each other. What the day looked like: After a warm welcome from alderman Maaike Veeningen, Han Dijk and Michiel Van Driessche kicked off the day by presenting the "Nature-powered heart of the city 2040" vision – the driving idea behind this symposium. Next, Jessica den Outer, an expert in environmental law, passionately argued for giving nature the rights it deserves. "Why do we only grant rights to people? Nature is also a stakeholder." We then gained new insights from Alexander D'Hooghe, a specialist in complex urban issues and co-founder of ORG, Permanent Modernity. After a tasty vegetarian lunch, the day continued with breakout sessions that dove into #practical discussions: - Water Plan (Lien Engels & Minte Ledegen) - Singelparks (Jona Geers, Han Goodijk, Frank Kalshoven & Ivonne D.) - Urban Greening & Healthy Soil (Pieter Boone, Lione du Pied, Eva van der Zon-Smits en Nina Ommerborn) - Floating Cities (Susanne Vermeulen, Tom Van Nieuwenhuijze, Gijs de Haan & Lisa Gerards) - Heat resistant city (Astrid Kepers-Koornberg & Sjoerd Brandsma) - Public Space Handbook & Mobility Transition (Tamara Ekamper, Anne Geertje Bouman & Marco Te Brömmelstroet) The day was beautifully opened and closed by spoken word artist Rik Zutphen, also known as the Droominee, whose powerful words, inspired by the day's discussions, left us with this thought: "Maybe this symposium can link your ideas to a greener city heart." GRONINGER ARCHITECTUURPRIJS 2024 - We are thrilled to announce that our project Mesdagplein has been nominated for the Groninger Architectuurprijs 2024! This award celebrates outstanding design within the municipality of Groningen and is organized by Stichting Dag van de Architectuur Groningen (DAG), GRAS, and Atelier Stadsbouwmeester as part of the Groningen Architecture Month. Mesdagplein represents the culmination of a collaborative and participatory process, where residents, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders united to create a vibrant space that reflects the diverse needs of our community. This project is a key part of the ongoing transformation of the Schildersbuurt, guided by the principles outlined in the Public Space Guideline adopted in December 2021. They presents a vision for the neighborhood's future, focusing on ten essential dimensions for enhancing public spaces. We’ve developed four strategic framework maps that identify opportunities within these dimensions, organized under four themes: Mobility, Green-Blue, Social, Experience. NIEMEYER OPEN DAG - Last Saturday, September 21st, the Niemeyer factory opened its doors to the public for the first time, welcoming an incredible crowd of around 4,500 visitors! From former employees to local residents, the community came together to explore the history of the tobacco factory. The event not only showcased the factory’s rich history, but also highlighted the ambitious transformation and regeneration project currently underway, further strengthening the connection between the site and the community. Niemeyer in Groningen is set to transform into a vibrant hub for the city, blending cultural, educational, and digital industries within a green industrial landscape. RIJNVLIET GOES TO BRUSSELS - Rijnvliet, the innovative residential neighborhood in Utrecht, has been selected to participate in the poster session of case studies at the NetworkNature EU Annual Event 2024, themed "Busting Myths: People with Nature." The NetworkNature initiative supports the global Nature-based Solutions (NbS) community by fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange at local, regional, and international levels. Through its resources and platforms for research, policy-making, and innovation, NetworkNature aims to amplify the impact of NbS, driving transformative change and helping to reverse biodiversity loss. Rijnvliet, a project that seamlessly integrates nature and community, is a leading example of Nature-based Solutions (NbS). The neighborhood is renowned for its sustainable design, featuring a 15-hectare food forest with over 1,000 fruit trees and 220 species of edible plants. This initiative not only enhances urban biodiversity but also serves as a model for participatory design, where local residents played an active role in shaping a living space that exists in harmony with nature. The edible neighborhood will be presented as a case study demonstrating how people and nature can coexist and thrive together, challenging the myth that humanity and the natural environment are fundamentally at odds. The project underscores the importance of nature regeneration, community governance, and the economic valuation of natural spaces in fostering a more sustainable future. We are happy that Rijnvliet will gain a valuable international platform to showcase its experiences, share best practices, and inspire similar initiatives around the world. Rijnvliet was commissioned by Gemeente Utrecht.
