FEMS is a pan-European scientific body campaigning to get science - and microbiology in particular - on the global agenda. Across all our Member Societies, we bring together around 30,000 professional microbiologists who are exploring microbiology and its impact on the world. We were set up in 1974 to promote microbiology across Europe, and today we are a growing coalition of over 50 Member Societies from 40 countries. For almost as many years, the FEMS Journals have published trusted microbiological science from our community of researchers. FEMS facilitates further exchange of scientific knowledge by organizing the biennial FEMS Congress for microbiologists around the world, and running a variety of initiatives to communicate microbiology. Members of FEMS Member Societies can apply for grants and/or support to undergo research training, and when organizing or attending a meeting.

Although this is a late post, I want to thank the HFP organizers for hosting such an insightful workshop on host and #fungal pathogen interactions during the FEBS 2024 Advanced Course held from May 18-24, 2024 in La Colle-sur-Loup, France. The projects presented were very interesting, up-to-date, and relevant. The conference inspired me to further my own work. I was able to discuss my preliminary results and received valuable feedback, which was beneficial for my research. I am very grateful to the organizers for selecting me to receive the Federation of European Microbiological Societies Young Scientist Award grant, which made my participation possible, and to HCEMM / Hungarian Centre of Excellence for Molecular Medicine for covering all of my necessary expenses. I also want to thank my supervisor, Prof. Attila Gácser, for sending me to conferences like this. I am really looking forward to see my progress on my research and get the chance to present it on this conference again. ✨

This is #FannyAngelinaHesse. Wait, you never heard of her?! She was the first person to use an Indonesian dessert called #agar to grow microbes! No big deal you say? When wait till you hear about what followed - because without Fanny Angelina Hesse and her agar we wouldn't have vaccines or antibiotics. None of modern biological and medical science. At all. That sounds like an interesting story, one that should be told? We totally agree - and that's why we, Corrado Nai and the team of researches, enthusiasts, and illustrators he gathered, are gladly looking forward to tell it! 🥇 Prize winning poster 🥇 Conferences are inspiring occasions to meet young and innovative people presenting cool solutions. Cristian Bolaño Losada presented a cool poster about fungal co-cultures for single cell oil production at #RRB2024. He was awarded the #FEMSMicrobiolLett poster prize for his work. Indeed, handing out prizes to young researchers and recognizing their fantastic work, is among of my favorite tasks at conferences! 🎉 The journal FEMS Microbiology Letters from the Federation of European Microbiological Societies honors the best poster involving #Microbiology at the RRB Renewable Resources & Biorefineries conference. Shifting our industrial focus to renewable resources is key for the #GreenTransition and I am never getting tired to underline how important the microbial world is on this journey. The collaboration between FEMS and RRB is therefore fruit- and useful. This brings me back to the poster: Working together is important - on macro-level as it is on micro-level. Last June 5-7, I had the privilege of attending the “20th International Conference on Renewable Resources & Biorefineries” (RRB Renewable Resources & Biorefineries) conference in Brussels, Belgium. During the event, I presented a poster on our work in the Biospectroscopy and Data modeling group at NMBU- BioSpec Norway with Consolidate Bioprocessing using fungal co-cultures to produce biodiesel as part of FME Bio4Fuels. It was a wonderful experience to reconnect with many friends from previous editions (Ludovica Varriale, Juan García Serna, always a pleasure!), listen to innovative ideas from researchers worldwide, and explore the beautiful city of Brussels for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised to receive the poster prize from the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS), presented by Michael Sauer. This recognition has provided a significant boost to our motivation, encouraging us to persevere despite the inherent challenges of scientific research. Additionally, I enjoyed participating in the Golden Crop Award photo contest, where we showcased an SEM image of zygospores from Mucoromycota, a result of our group's research. Last but not least, I am deeply grateful to BioCat - Graduate School in Biocatalysis for supporting this invaluable experience with a travel grant. Thank you for this opportunity!
