🛰 Could future space missions utilize entirely neural-based on-board optimal guidance and control systems? ⏱ Together with the Micro Air Vehicle Laboratory (MAVLab, TUDelft), ESA Advanced Concepts Team set out to answer this question in the latest issue of the Science Robotics journal, which features our work on 'Optimality Principles in Spacecraft Neural Guidance and Control'. 🪐 We're excited to highlight the progress in developing end-to-end neural architectures for tasks such as interplanetary mission guidance, planetary landings, and close-proximity operations. We propose advanced neural models capable of learning optimal strategies and greatly improve the autonomy and efficiency of spacecraft and unmanned aerial vehicles. Moreover, we explore drone racing as an excellent test environment for these architectures. 💻 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eZr22XGS 📖 And for the details about our recent work, check out our freshly published review in Science Robotics: https://lnkd.in/gH2KYjx9

Last week, I had the pleasure to attend the #29th #International #Symposium on #Space #Flight #Dynamics, at European Space Agency - ESA - #ESOC in Darmstadt and present two of our works. It was great to be able to connect with #flight #dynamics and #mission #analysis colleagues from across the globe. Here is a glimpse of the research we presented: * "Stochastic Continuation of Trajectories in the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem via Differential Algebra", link: https://lnkd.in/ekYbhPSj. * "Computing Low-Thrust Transfers in the Asteroid Belt, a Comparison Between Astrodynamical Manipulations and a Machine Learning Approach", link: https://lnkd.in/e7BucWWJ; with database also available on Zenodo: https://lnkd.in/eYCMTmmQ. * "Breaking Traditions: Introducing a Surrogate Primer Vector in non Keplerian Dynamics", link: https://lnkd.in/eT6dQnBq. * "Global Optimization for Trajectory Design via Invariant Manifolds in the Earth-Moon Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem", link: https://lnkd.in/ezTku6TG * "NeuralODEs for VLEO Simulations: Introducing thermoNET for Thermosphere Modelling", link: https://lnkd.in/eWhKUeYR As usual, we have open-sourced the code for most cases. A big thank you to all my co-authors Nicola Baresi, David Lloyd, Dario Izzo, Francesco Biscani, Laurent Beauregard, Emmanuel Blazquez, Flavio Tagliaferri. 📢 SpOC 3.0 started! ❗We just released the three challenges of this year's Space Optimization Competition (SpOC), co-organised with the GECCO 2024 conference (https://lnkd.in/ed8Qnz2C). 🤸♀️ Try your skills by mastering two out of these three challenges, with topics covering graph theory, mission analysis, and robotics! As in last year's SpOC, although the challenges are strongly tied to real applications in the space area, no domain expertise (apart from optimisation / AI / coding / math) is required! Also, to participate in SpOC, you do not have to participate in GECCO. 🌐 You can find all information, challenge descriptions, supporting code, and forums to contact us or other SpOC participants on our github repository: https://lnkd.in/dhDWRCTy 🖱 To submit solutions, visit ESA's optimize platform: https://lnkd.in/eA5xE8Qt 🏆 May the best win! #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #Computing #Optimisation #Space #AI4Space #ML4Space #EvolutionaryComputation #GeneticAlgorithms #Algorithms #Evolution #CS #ComputerScience #Coding #Competition #Mathematics #Megastructures #SpOC #GECCO #Constellations #Interferometry #Assembly #MissionAnalysis #Robotics #Graphs #GraphTheory European Space Agency - ESA ESA Advanced Concepts Team ESA Technology
