Elestor's flow battery: Large scale, Long duration, Scalable & Affordable

Elestor has introduced an innovative electricity storage technology for large scale stationary applications (LDES), based on the flow battery principle. With this, the electricity storage costs (LCoS) are reduced to an absolute minimum. Low cost, abundant active materials are used, combined with a patented system design and easy to manufacture and compact cells. This triple cost reduction strategy enables introduction of viable business cases, which are essential to stimulate the adoption of electricity storage and thus to accelerate the energy transition. The technology has the potential to replace fossil power plants at GWh scale (bi-directional power plants) and has all the properties to become the equivalent in large-scale long duration electricity storage of what Lithium ion is today for mobility. The essential difference of the Elestor technology with conventional batteries is that power (MW) and capacity (MWh) are uncoupled: The Elestor technology is 100% modular and virtually any desired power-capacity combination can be designed, enabling very cost-effective bridging of long periods during which hardly renewable electricity is generated. With a progressing dependency on intermittent energy sources (sun, wind), this property becomes increasingly distinctive, if not decisive, for the energy transition to succeed. Another unique feature is that the Elestor technology can be integrated in hydrogen infrastructures and electrolysers, resulting in a large reduction of green hydrogen production costs. In a competition entered by 600 companies, Elestor is named as one of the 10 most innovative companies in The Netherlands by the Amsterdam Centre for Business Innovation (University of Amsterdam). Fueled by a Series A investment of 30M€, in a round led by Equinor Ventures with also Vopak joining, as well as by agreements with clients strategically adopting its innovative storage technology, Elestor has embarked on an ultra-rapid growth path.

In 2004, the company was acquired by the German public listed Singulus Technologies AG and in 2006, Guido was appointed CEO of the new daughter company.  He subsequently held this position for 8 years, during which the company became global market- and technology-leader in its field.     𝗘𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗥&𝗗 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆  Leading academics and scientists attending ECS - The Electrochemical Society conference in San Francisco this week will be able to take part in a technological and scientific flow battery deep-dive led by Elestor B.V.’s head of R&D, Dr. Yohanes Hugo.   In his lecture, which will illuminate how hydrogen-based flow batteries make it possible to create a 100% clean energy system, Dr Hugo will elaborate on how different chemistries can be used in tandem with #hydrogen in a closed system that will make large-scale, long-duration energy storage affordable, easy to scale and robust.   Scientific explorations into alternative and additional technology solutions are integral to Elestor’s role as a technology centre for flow batteries. Our R&D team is constantly seeking to push the boundaries of what is possible.   In his lecture, Dr. Hugo will explain the central role cutting edge electricity storage technology will play as we scale the renewables-based energy system in a responsible manner that also enhances the resilience of the electricity grid. He will also outline the obvious benefits that will arise from the integration of hydrogen-based flow battery with hydrogen pipelines and electrolysers.   As humble servants of both science and society, Elestor B.V. is obviously more than ready to lead the way through the energy transition. As a cutting edge technology company, Elestor B.V. invest significant resources in research and development in order to ensure it remains ahead of rivals in the clean energy storage sphere. This leadership position has enabled Elestor B.V. attract top international scientists to our Technical Advisory Board, which is obviously going to be 100% independent to preserve the integrity of its members and of their conclusions. Our Technical Advisory Board will initially comprise three renowned industry experts. In no particular order, they are: 𝟭. 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗼, who is the H. Eugene McBrayer Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Vanderbilt University, USA. Professor Peter Pintauro is a Fellow of the Electrochemical Society, a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and a past President of the North American Membrane Society. He was the 2018 recipient of the US Department of Energy Fuel Cells R&D Award and he received the Walter van Schalkwijk Award in Sustainable Energy Technology from the Electrochemical Society in 2023. 𝟮. 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿, who has been working on energy converters and storage systems such as redox flow batteries since 2005 soon after he completed his doctorate in physical chemistry at Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf, Germany. In 2011, Dr Peter Fischer became group leader of the Redox Flow Batteries and Stationary Storage group in the Applied Electrochemistry department at the Fraunhofer ICT Institute for Chemical Technology. Dr. Fischer chairs the Communication Committee of the European association Flow Batteries Europe, co-chairs the "Sustainability" group in Batteries Europe, founded the European Union research network FLORES. 𝟯. 𝗔 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿, who is renowned both within and beyond our industry and who must remain anonymous for now due to a current contractual arrangement that prevents him from publishing his engagement with any third party until further notice. The professor’s collaboration with Elestor has naturally been approved by his current employer and there is no conflict of interest.
