A new milestone! ✨ Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute; AEI) and Leibniz Universität Hannover have set up, tested, and commissioned a laser source in a laboratory at the #ETpathfinder site in Maastricht. ETpathfinder is a research and development facility for the #EinsteinTelescope, the future third-generation European gravitational-wave observatory. Later this year, in addition to further characterization, the first preliminary tests are planned to integrate the laser system into ETpathfinder. Full integration and regular experiments with the new laser source in ETpathfinder are scheduled to begin next year. Read the press release: 🇬🇧 https://lnkd.in/eigAqkYS 🇩🇪 https://lnkd.in/egEtGvGU
Over ons
👇 #LiègeCap2030 #TelescopeEinstein #BigScience

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗳𝗮𝗻 At the Maastricht University - Faculty of Science and Engineering, physicists are conducting research for the future #EinsteinTelescope. 🎓🔬🌌 Here we will introduce you to some of them. Meet Stefan Danilishin, Associate professor of gravitational waves: 'Ever since my student days, I have been curious whether we can observe the strange quantum behaviour of the tiniest particles when we look closely enough at ordinary objects. For instance, you might encounter new measurement uncertainties when determining the position of a mirror by bouncing a light particle off it. When I was studying, this effect was entirely theoretical, far below the precision we could achieve experimentally. However, in the Einstein Telescope, it will come into play. We need to find solutions for all possible sources of noise so that we can measure gravitational waves with sufficient precision. If successful, the Einstein Telescope will allow us to test the most extreme phenomena of general relativity and perhaps even catch a glimpse of new physics beyond it. The atmosphere in our group is good; I would call it humane. There is little formal hierarchy, and we are interested in each other’s opinions and involved in each other’s work. This is important because no matter how much experience you gain, you can always learn from others.' ↘ This portrait was published in DIMENSIES, magazine of Nikhef (Nationaal instituut voor subatomaire fysica). Can quantum computing help tame the enormous data sets that will come out of the Einstein Telescope? Read this insightful story by the University of Maastricht!
Quantum computers are bringing about the greatest technological breakthrough of this century, or so the promise goes. But, what is quantum, and what are quantum computers? What are the possibilities for using them? How does one programme a quantum computer? The answers to these questions will be explored throughout a collection of five stories, starting with Part 1: Quantum. 🧑💻Why quantum matters Atoms and smaller elementary particles behave in unusual, sometimes unpredictable ways. It sounds strange, but it is this unpredictability that gives a quantum computer its power. Executing precise calculations with previously unheard-of possibilities in a way that physicists still do not completely comprehend. This technology has the potential to revolutionise fields from artificial intelligence to cryptography, and even tackle problems that are currently unsolvable by traditional computers. 🔎 Research at FSE Quantum computers, unlike classical ones, utilize the principles of superposition and entanglement to perform complex calculations at unprecedented speeds. Researchers like Jacco de Vries and Menica Dibenedetto are at the forefront, developing algorithms capable of processing massive datasets and solving intricate problems that classical computers cannot handle. Their work is critical for projects like the Einstein Telescope, which aims to observe overlapping gravitational wave signals. Despite challenges in hardware development and error management, they are optimistic about quantum computing's potential to revolutionize data processing and problem-solving in various scientific domains.
