No, you didn't miscount the number of actuators, there are 8 actuators in this 6-DoF octopod that E2M Technologies developed initially for the entertainment industry. Redundancy on the actuator level makes the ride safety concept a lot easier. Besides safety, the octopod has more advantages, such as higher bandwidth potential for automotive simulation and testing applications, more symmetric load distribution, and higher payload capacity. Together with our parent company MTS Systems Corporation Systems, E2M Technologies delivered 4 electric 6-DOF motion systems to the Carleton University. This setup is used to study the failure mechanisms of complex suspended ceiling constructions under real-world earthquake loading. Working in sync, the 4 E2M Technologies motion systems will subject experimental suspended ceilings to an array of floor motions, enabling Carleton University researchers to study their performance across a range of earthquake events and building heights.
