High-energy batteries are on with nano-porous silicon

Over ons

With climate change a key issue in the world today, electrification of mobility is rising fast. Restricted range, charging speed and cost are standing in the way of wide scale EV adoption. Today's batteries use graphite as an active anode material, whereas silicon has up to ten times more capacity. Until now, the transition to silicon was hindered because silicon can swell and break when charged. At E-magy, we supply nano-porous silicon for high-energy batteries. Our unique specialty silicon overcomes the swelling challenge by containing the expansion within the nanopores themselves, as validated by ZSW, a leading institute for applied battery research. We make high-energy silicon-dominant anodes a reality, compatible with existing production lines and are ready to scale up. Since 2013, we have been developing our solution in our cutting edge production facility near Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The team consists of driven, advanced materials specialists with over 20 years of silicon crystallisation experience. Cooperating with more than a dozen leading automotive and battery manufacturers, we bring our clients winning battery performance. We are part of multiple leading European battery associations and consortia to bring the industry forward. As ultimately, our dream is for everyone to enjoy the benefits of clean, electrically powered mobility. E-magy. On with silicon

Dear battery experts, Exciting News: Today we released the latest version of the European „Battery Atlas“ (Update 2024). Content: The “Battery Atlas” once again reflects the current commitment of cell manufacturers, module and pack producers, suppliers of systems and battery active material as well as recycling companies and battery test centers. A new addition is the consideration of market participants for battery quality assurance, passive cell components and so-called “second life” applications. Key Message: The networking of companies beyond their own areas will be crucial to whether Europe can compete globally. If the different market participants succeed in establishing cooperation along the entire value chain, they can offer services as 'turnkey' solutions, jointly exploit cost advantages through economies of scale and pool financial resources for research and development. Download: The „Battery Atlas“ can be downloaded free of charge here: https://lnkd.in/ePVdiSU5 Printed Version: We have a limited number of printed versions. If you are interested in this, write a message to: [email protected] Important Notice: Although the “Battery Atlas” looks at the European battery market from many different angels and business areas, this document does not claim to be exhaustive. We will be happy to incorporate suggestions and additions submitted in writing into the next, updated edition. Many thanks to everyone involved: Many thanks to all authors (PEM RWTH Aachen University) and the feedback on the maps from various European battery actors: Achim Kampker, Gerrit Bockey, Moritz Frieges, Natalia Soldan, Niklas Kisseler, Merlin Frank, Benedikt Späth , Jan Felix Plumeyer, Artur Scheibe, Patrizia Cacciotti and Mischa Wyboris #Europe #Battery #Atlas #LithiumIonBattery #Recycling #Production #Electromobility #AutomotiveIndustry Battery-News

E-magy’s Swedish travel mission last week was capped off by informative visits to Chalmers University of Technology and Volvo Energy onsite in Gothenburg. Having worked on the LEVC London Taxi project back in 2017-19, it was exciting to see the early #wirelesscharging trials conducted on these vehicles (which used PHEV Volvo powertrains) carried on with Volvo BEVs. It was surprising how some of our delegation asked the same questions around the speed, efficiency and safety of wireless charging that I had heard over 7 years ago - showing that as new people join the electric vehicle industry training and education is as essential as it’s ever been! Silicon dominant anodes combine well with wireless charging, as it enables faster charging and the higher energy density comfortably offsets the small weight increase from the onboard wireless charging gear. #OnWithSilicon

Last Friday I had the pleasure to present E-magy at the HackSummit in Lausanne. Originally a food-oriented summit at which tech companies present their alternative proteins, sustainable packaging and other food innovations to investors, the event has broadened to include #climatetech. It was interesting to experience the similarity of providing ingredients to the food industry with providing #battery materials to the #EV industry, both to improve health of people and planet. Thank you for having me Laura Hodgkiss, Emilie Dellecker, Abby Stern!

It’s been a fantastic Day 1 representing E-magy in Stockholm with the Netherlands Innovation Mission! We’ve not only had the opportunity to network amongst ourselves and meet the best of the Dutch battery industry, but also to: 🧪 Visit the SEEL Swedish Electric Transport Laboratory, to see the latest high tech battery and powertrain testing for electric vehicles 🚛 Attend Scania Group’s headquarters, and gaining an insight into their current production and the opportunities faced by electrification in the truck sector 🤝 Network at Netherlands Embassy in Sweden, meeting the ambassador and hearing about the increasing collaboration between 🇸🇪 and 🇳🇱 I’m hugely looking forward to what the next few days bring.

A few weeks ago our Head of Product Marco Spreafico and I attended the AABC (Advanced Automotive Battery Conference) in the French city of Strasbourg, presenting and discussing E-magy's next-generation #siliconanode material for #lithiumion batteries! It was a hugely insightful event, where the biggest names globally in batteries and #electricvehicles presented updates on their current technologies and plans for the future. My key takeaways are as follows: 1. Cell formats: it used to be a major topic of conversation, but it's clear automotive OEMs are still undecided on whether to use cylindrical (currently 2170, but next 46xx) or prismatic form factors. Pouch has been sidelined due to perceived safety issues, and difficulty working in cell-to-pack configurations. 2. Solid state: there was little mention of Li-metal, with silicon anodes becoming the key technology in many companies' roadmaps for achieving ASSBs (All Solid State Batteries). A few are still hedging their bets on both until certain TRL/MRL are reached, but this is costly and time-consuming. 3. Silicon anodes: there were so many silicon anode presentations at this event that they appeared over multiple days, showing the boom in this sector of the battery industry. It was already noticeable, however, that in the Si-C space (20-50% Si content), only a few companies appeared to be close to going into products in 2026/7 - hence I think there will be some consolidation here in 2024/5.
