Step into Suite 148, crafted as backdrop to Ronald van der Kemp's work, the force behind the world’s first sustainable couture label. Playing with different shades of white, the suite features a custom-designed sculptural bed that can also serve as a pedestal and container for Ronald’s design pieces during special occasions. Moreover, guests can contemplate the artwork produced by him above the bed, created using leftover materials from fashion in line with his sustainable ethos.   A second room functions as Ronald’s own creative nest and features a collage wall showcasing his haute couture portfolio through photographs and sketches. The iconic atelier table was conceived as an upcycled piece, combining a plain white top resting on four second-hand elements, including two vintage cabinets, a leg from an antique table, and a mirrored pillar. Amsterdam-based D/DOCK has revealed ‘t Huys, a new hospitality concept within 19th-century hotel and five-star stay, De L'Europe Amsterdam. Each of the 14 suites has its own unique aesthetic and artistic flair, with D/DOCK embarking on a collaborative co-designing process with local creatives – ranging from sustainable fashion designer Ronald van der Kemp to the renowned Van Gogh Museum. Samenwerken aan zorgzame buurten: daar hebben we iedereen bij nodig. Gisteravond organiseerde ik daarom het eerste meedenkgesprek in Gemeente Amsterdam, Stadsdeel Centrum met als thema wonen. We zijn niet alleen het oudste maar ook een snel vergrijzend stadsdeel. Net als in de rest van Nederland zien we oplopende personeelstekorten, in combinatie met een voorraad woningen die lang niet altijd geschikt is voor senioren. Dat betekent dat we veel meer en vooral ook andere dingen moeten doen om te zorgen dat je in onze binnenstad goed en veilig oud kunt worden. Welke oplossingen passen bij onze buurten? Welke woonvormen zijn aantrekkelijk voor ouderen en waarom? Hoe kunnen studenten en jonge gezinnen een rol vervullen en wat hebben generaties elkaar te bieden? Ik vond het ongelofelijk leuk dat er naast bewoners, maatschappelijke organisaties, woningcorporaties ook studenten op deze avond afkwamen die daar goede ideeën over hadden. Die hopelijk allemaal met nieuwe inspiratie en contacten naar buiten liepen. En natuurlijk gaan wij met die ideeën verder, en in gesprek met onze partners. Wat er zoal naar voren kwam? De do’s: - Stimuleren van ontmoeting en samenleven door meerdere generaties, verrassend hoeveel mensen dat zien zitten, ook in gemixte wooncomplexen. - Uitgaan van wat ouderen zelf kunnen bijdragen in plaats van alleen naar hun zorgbehoefte kijken. - Woningruil eenvoudiger maken en toegankelijke woningen reserveren voor ouderen. Een paar van de dont’s wil ik u ook niet onthouden - verplichte rollatorraces en meer van zulks 😄 - ouderen zien als probleem in plaats van als kans om de wooncrisis op te lossen. Volgende week staat de Uitvoeringsagenda ouderenhuisvesting op de agenda van de Amsterdamse gemeenteraad. Dat is mooi, want meer aandacht voor dit belangrijke onderwerp is hard nodig. Wonen, zorg en welzijn moeten in beleid en uitvoering echt hand in hand gaan. We are excited to unveil our very own suite, part of the innovative 't Huys hospitality concept developed by D/DOCK for De L'Europe Amsterdam. Stepping into Suite 242 presents an unexpected sight: a grey liminal space that, like a desert, is devoid of recognisable spatial elements. The emptiness, although initially disorienting, encourages people to find unique ways to use the space, interpret it, and make it their own. The suite is composed of two specular areas connected by two passages. The entrance corridor, an ode to love, hosts artworks celebrating both the feminine and masculine. One wall, titled Viva la Vulva, showcases ceramic abstract shapes representing female genitals. Across from it, a cabinet transformed into a cave wall by scratching the paint off tells stories about primordial hospitality rituals. The two main rooms represent the yin and yang — opposite yet interconnected. In one room, a central, sturdy block can serve as a table for private dinners, a workspace, a surface for practising body treatments, or a stage for performances. The spatial experience is complemented by a set of custom ceramic items that function as both tableware and artistic totems. In the second room, the soft altar can transform into a bed for the night or serve as a space for reading, meditating, or simply relaxing, according to the guest’s desire and curiosity. 't Huys marks a new era in hospitality, where creativity, culture, and community converge, reinforced by the five-star luxury experience of De L'Europe Amsterdam. D/DOCK renovated 207 rooms and the public areas of Corendon Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, giving it a new identity as part of the Marriott Tribute Portfolio family. The transformation of the hotel into a gateway to inspiring moments and a place where stories come together follows the successful redesign of Corendon Amsterdam New-West, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel 🏨✨ The hotel is conveniently located near Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, within the Corendon Village complex that houses 680 rooms and suites, all being redeveloped by D/DOCK. As part of this transformation, a ‘Windows of Holland’ concept merges Dutch cultural heritage with modern comfort. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a magnificent reception area filled with patterns reminiscent of the Dutch skies and large-scale art installations integrated into the building’s architecture, offering insights into Holland’s culture and history. The interiors, featuring Dutch maritime scenes and Delft blue patterns on select furniture and carpets, subtly inspire guests throughout their stay. The atrium has been reimagined as 'Corendon Central,' a dynamic space designed for interaction, exchange, and connection. It acts as an extension of the restaurant and a prime meeting point, forming the base for a vibrant microcosm. Committed to sustainable design, 60% of the existing furniture has been reused. Other notable features of the hotel include a unique backyard garden with a retired Boeing 747 repurposed as an outdoor event venue and a sun-drenched rooftop bar with a terrace, catering to both leisure and business travellers.
