Over ons

Damen Naval is the dedicated naval shipbuilding division of the Damen Shipyards Group, which brings together all the naval activities of the group, both in the Netherlands and abroad. With roots stretching back almost 150 years – to the Royal Schelde yard in Vlissingen – Damen Naval is the only naval original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in the Netherlands. Having delivered more than 400 vessels to customers all around the world, we are a trusted partner in the international marketplace, known for our role as full-service provider, or integrator, throughout the lifecycle of our products. The creation of Damen Naval follows a series of impressive accomplishments on the international market, among which are our selection for the design and build of the German Navy’s F126 frigates and the delivery of the 10th SIGMA combatant to the export market. Moreover, we are proud of our long tradition of serving the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN), the launching customer of eight successive generations of Damen Combatants. This relationship continues today with the contract to build the RNLN’s new Combat Support Ship and the new Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates (ASWF) for both the Netherlands and Belgium, and our preselection as one of the parties – along with partner SAAB – for the Walrus Class Submarine Replacement Programme. Damen Naval is one of the cornerstones of the Netherlands’ naval triple helix. This unique way of working together with government, knowledge centres, and industry shapes the landscape in which innovative and distinctive ship classes are created. The high quality of these vessels is evidenced by their long lifespan and the fact that many of them go on to have a second life with navies around the world. We remain committed to helping protect the security interests of our customers at sea and support the development of a sustainable shipbuilding industry in the client country.

On this day six years ago, a very special ship was launched at our shipyard Damen Galați. Research and Supply Vessel (RSV) Nuyina was designed and built for the Australian Antactic Division. In many ways, Nuyina is quite different from the frigates and combatants we usually design, but there were also many similarities. For instance, the vessel needs to be able to sail as quietly as possible when she is carrying out her research. Nuyina was commissioned in August 2021 and set out from Hobart, Tasmania, on her first operational voyage just before Christmas 2021. She carried out her cold weather trials in the Southern Ocean. Since then, the vessel has sailed to the Macquarie Island research station for resupply tasks and undertook a rescue operation at Casey Station research base on the Bailey Peninsula in Antarctica to evacuate a member of the base team who suffered a medical emergency. For 2025, a research mission has been planned to the Denman Glacier, east of David Island, Queen Mary Land. © The photo in the ice was taken by Pete Harmsen of the Australian Antarctic Division. #Naval #Shipbuilding #Nuyina #DamenNaval

On Prince's Day, the King's speech outlined the government's key plans for the coming year, with a strong focus on resilience in the face of evolving security risks. Safeguarding our digital infrastructure, energy networks, ports, and waterworks is a central priority. For the first time since 1995, the Netherlands will meet NATO's 2% GDP target for defence spending, with 22 billion euros allocated to the armed forces next year. The Defence White Paper 2024 details a clear long-term plan for the Netherlands’ defence industry. In line with these goals, Damen Naval, as our national OEM, remains a long-term trusted partner, working closely with the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Netherlands Navy, our trusted naval suppliers and knowledge institutes. Following the King’s speech, our Managing Director Roland Briene, was interviewed in Den Helder. “We are tackling these plans together”, he explained. “In a context of restoring our naval forces, you really need an early involvement and partnership to accelerate and scale up to the needed capacity,” he stated. The increased defence budget will support growth and employment down the line in Den Helder, securing long-term maintenance over a lifecycle of 30 years of The Royal Netherlands Naval fleet. Additionally, it will drive innovation at Damen Naval in Vlissingen. #DamenNaval #shipbuilding #naval

At SMM Hamburg, we received a special visit on our stand from the naval cohort of the German International Advanced Staff Course. We updated the group on the F126 project and enjoyed the questions and open exchange with the officers. We would like to thank the organisation for the opportunity to talk about our project, our partners, and what the project means for the German Navy, as well as for the German maritime industry. #F126 #naval #shipbuilding #partnership #keytechnology

After successfully participating in the international Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC 2024) naval exercise, the crew of “our” KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata is on the way back to Indonesia. On the way, the SIGMA frigate visited Guam and the crew faced one additional challenge: participating in the 6km Santa Rita run. We are very proud that they wore the running shirts we sponsored for the occasion. KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata is one of our signature modular naval vessels, built in Indonesia at the PT PAL shipyard in Surabaya.   #Naval #SIGMA #shipbuilding #KRIRadenEddyMartadinata

Excellent news: we have signed a contract for a new Colombian frigate! In Cartagena, Colombia, the Corporación de Ciencia y Tecnología para el Desarrollo de la Industria Naval, Marítima y Fluvial (COTECMAR) and Damen signed the contract for technical support and the supply of components for the construction of the Plataforma Estratégica de Superficie (PES - Strategic Surface Platform). It will be the first frigate to be built in Colombia and construction will be carried out by COTECMAR based on Damen Naval's SIGMA 10514 model. The 107.5-metre ship represents a significant investment in local employment and technological development of the Colombian maritime industry and thus in the national economy. The contract signing was attended by Reina Buijs, Ambassador of the Netherlands in Colombia, Vice Admiral Juan Ricardo Rozo Obregón, Comandante de la Armada de Colombia; Vice Admiral Luis Fernando Marquez Velosa, President of COTECMAR, Roland Briene, Managing Director of Damen Naval and Pieter Becker, Commercial Director PES Colombia of Damen Naval.

This #frigatefriday takes us back to our Royal Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen in the 1960s. It was here that three frigates of the former Royal Netherlands Navy’s Van Speijk-class frigates were built. This included HNLMS Van Nes (F805) and this 113.4-metre-long vessel was commissioned on 9 August 1967. The Van Speijk-class frigates specialised in anti-submarine warfare and were in Dutch service from 1967 to 1989. On 11 February 1986, Indonesia and the Netherlands signed an agreement for transfer of all Van Speijk class frigates to be reclassified as the Ahmad Yani class frigates. Van Nes was transferred to Indonesia and renamed KRI Oswald Siahaan (354). The Ahmad Yani class frigates form the 2nd Fleet Command together with, among others, the Martadinata class (SIGMA 10514) frigate squadron and the Diponegoro-class (SIGMA 9113) corvette squadron. They are stationed at the Surabaya Fleet Base. The first picture shows the launch of HNLMS Van Nes. The second shows her as she departed our yard in Vlissingen in 1967. The third picture shows KRI Oswald Siahaan with another Damen Naval-designed vessel KRI Sultan Iskandar Muda (367), and the U.S. Navy amphibious dock and landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46) during a Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training exercise Indonesia 2013. #shipbuilding #Navy #maritime #Naval

One year ago, the Midlife Update of HNLMS Johan de Witt was nearly completed, and the Landing Platform Dock was given a complete revamp. Recently, the impressive vessel participated in Baltic Operations 2024 (BALTOPS 24), and she was looking good. We love seeing the ships we design, build, and repair play their part in keeping our oceans safe. We wish HNLMS Johan de Witt and her crew smooth sailing for many years to come. #naval #shipbuilding #DamenNaval
