Sustainable development and the strive to make our economies circular are grand challenges the world faces. These can only be solved via an interwoven collaboration of society, science, and technology. Academic education should be at the forefront of training the new generation of connectors, who are skilled in collaborating outside their comfort zone and in creating viable and practical solutions with different stakeholders. During half a year of challenge-based education, The Da Vinci Program offers students an immersive learning experience with the aim of educating a new generation of changemakers, connectors, and innovators. In collaboration with private and public partners, interdisciplinary student teams will attack sustainability-related challenges. During the program students from Eindhoven University of Technology, Wageningen University & Research and Utrecht University will work in innovation hubs at public and private partners outside university. Make the energy transition work together with VDL Groep! Contribute to the shift from fossil energy to green energy (such as wind, solar, and hydropower) where no CO2 emissions occur! VDL Hydrogen Systems in Eindhoven develops electrolysers with which green hydrogen can be produced. Currently they are working on the development of Alkaline and Solid Oxide based technologies. At present, the costs of hydrogen produced with green electricity are much higher than hydrogen produced from fossil sources. For this reason, it seems that the parties needing to go green are waiting until it becomes more favorable. The consequence of this is that the chain that wants to supply equipment for the energy transition is not getting underway. The goal of the challenge is to map out the hydrogen chain in the Netherlands and Europe (from electricity production to application) and investigate which bottlenecks (processes that can lead to delays in the development of the European hydrogen economy) need to be removed. We invite Eindhoven University of Technology, Wageningen University & Research and Utrecht University students to join the Da Vinci Master Program and help investigate how VDL can contribute to the transition to green hydrogen! For more information and to register 👉 https://lnkd.in/eWahxtBK Online Information sessions about the program will be held on: – June 5th (Wednesday): 17.00-18.00h – June 10th (Monday): 16.30-17.30h To join the sessions please send us first an email. Have you ever wondered what happens with confiscated counterfeited goods? Like fake bags or shoes? It may have never crossed your mind that these goods are usually destructed causing unnecessary pollution and emissions :-(. REACT (www.react.org) is a not-for-profit anti-counterfeiting network running for over 30 years. It has 360 business members in all sectors and activities in 120 countries. REACT Sustains is a program developed by REACT to encourage the sustainable disposal of counterfeited goods. REACT's ambition is to work towards a complete processing program, preventing any unnecessary destruction of useable components found within counterfeit products, thereby preventing unnecessary pollution and emissions. 📢 Utrecht University, Eindhoven University of Technology and Wageningen University & Research students: the people from REACT need your help in encouraging the sustainable processing counterfeited goods. Dive into questions on component usability for example. You may have ideas on how to recycle of upcycle. Or maybe you are more interested in the legal side and wish to analyze the EU Waste Directive. There are many more complex questions to work on! Help us in making this world more sustainable and join the Da Vinci Master Program! Happy birthday to Leonardo Da Vinci! Today, on April 15th 1452, the painter, sculptor, draughtsman, engineer, stage designer, architect, musician, anatomist, naturalist, physicist, astronomer, inventor, cartographer, and poet was born in Anchiano, 3 km from Vinci, Italy. His full name was Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci which means Leonardo son of Piero from Vinci. The achievements of this exceptional genius, widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals ever to have lived, are too many to name. His unquenchable curiosity and feverishly inventive imagination are still an inspiration for many and have also been an inspiration for the Da Vinci approach of teaching the new generation of innovators, connectors and changemakers. Cheers to this remarkably talented man and may he continue to be an inspiration for the young generation of talented people!

Six months ago I was given the incredible opportunity to participate in Da Vinci Master Program organized by the honors committee of Universiteit Utrecht. The project consisted of developing a prototype to reduce all carbon emissions related to business travel for the UMC Utrecht. As a result I, together with Wei Yang and Dzhamilya Dyussenova, created a website on which employees gain knowledge related to their emissions combined with different components that can be used as a tool to a reduction in emissions for all departments within UMC Utrecht. Additionally, I was able to further strengthen my sustainability knowledge. One thing that this course left me with is the insight that logistical changes can and do make huge progress. I had the pleasure of discussing with, among others, the Head of Carbon Neutrality at De Beers Group, the Sustainable Supply Chain Director CEO of Nike and the Director of Sustainability of the Dutch company AkzoNobel, how they incorporate sustainability in all parts of their value chain while seeing it as an opportunity rather than as a threat. Even shareholders are shifting their preferences towards more sustainable practices as they increasingly offer better prices than standard methods of production. This poses important considerations to be taken into account by Universities when developing bachelor structures, in order to account for a deeper understanding of sustainability and its crucial role in the future of society as a whole.
📢 A message for master students from Utrecht University, Wageningen University & Research, Eindhoven University of Technology and UMC Utrecht Do you want to save animals from suffering and death by promoting cutting-edge technologies? This is not a hypothetical question. It is a real challenge that you are invited to take on! You probably know that animal testing is still required by regulations applied to many chemicals, pesticides and drugs. But you may not know that animal testing is unreliable, unethical and unnecessary. Many studies have shown that animal models do not accurately predict what happens in humans. On the other hand, new scientific methods like artificial intelligence (AI) and human organoids offer more reliable and relevant alternatives. Methods called New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) are already used for cosmetic products in the EU. However, the EU chemical regulation called REACh still requires animal testing for chemical cosmetic ingredients, creating a contradiction with the cosmetic product regulation. This is where you come in. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of Masters students who are passionate about this topic. Your goal is to help shape the future of safety evaluations under the EU chemical regulation. You will investigate the following questions: 🔶 Why is animal testing still demanded and what are the drawbacks? 🔶 What are the current scientific developments that can replace animal testing under REACh? 🔶 What are the economic benefits of replacing animals with advanced scientific tools? 🔶 How can we get regulatory approval and implementation of NAMs? 🔶 Who are the key stakeholders that need to be involved and persuaded in this process? You will conduct research, analysis and synthesis to come up with a roadmap to the European Authorities on how to achieve the regulatory implementation of NAMs. You will also craft powerful messages to influence different stakeholders to support this change. You will present your findings and recommendations in a report and filmed presentation. Are you ready to take on this challenge and make a difference for animals, humans and the planet? Let's get started! 💪 Do you need more information? ✉ [email protected] Would you like to pre-register? 👉 https://lnkd.in/eWahxtBK Merel Ritskes-Hoitinga Paul Carmichael Pauline Krijgsheld Marjo Lexmond Sonja Isken Sietse Overbeek Marijn Hollestelle Björn Scheenstra Fieke Sluijs Hannie van Berlo - van den Broek Sabine Uijl Bert Weckhuysen Harry Bitter Emiel Hensen Daniela Salvatori Hannah Thuijs Dimitra Mousa Gabriela Guzmán Sanabria alliance TU/e, WUR, UU, UMC Utrecht (EWUU) https://lnkd.in/eHw28iCF
