🎉 We are pleased to announce that our Working Group 3 within the Cost Action GLITSS successfully held a workshop on September 25th and 26th at ESC UNIL – École des sciences criminelles, focusing on Exploring Illicit Trades with a Focus on Crypto Assets. 🌍 During the workshop, we delved into the ways criminals and organized groups are exploiting crypto assets for illicit activities, particularly money laundering. While the widespread use of crypto assets remains limited, they are predominantly utilized in crimes such as ransomware, fraud, and the illegal drug trade. A key challenge we face is the lack of comprehensive data, which continues to hinder deeper research. ☀️ We look forward to sharing more insights in our upcoming research brief, which will address the regulatory challenges surrounding assets. 🌐 🗺️ #GLITSS #COSTAction #globalization #illicittrade #sustainability #security #research #networking #Europe Francesco Giumelli Pim Geelhoed Mara Clemente Aleksandar Marsavelski Raluca-Ioana Mocanu Indrek Saar Stefano Caneppele Daniela Irrera George Azzopardi Mirela Imsirovic https://lnkd.in/embC2yVc
🌐 On September 25th and 26th, the Cost Action GLITSS (Working Group 3 - Responses to Illicit Trade) hosted an engaging workshop at ESC UNIL – École des sciences criminelles, focused on Exploring Illicit Trades with a Focus on Crypto Assets. The workshop shed light on how crypto assets are being exploited by criminals and organized groups, particularly for money laundering. However, existing scientific evidence shows that while crypto assets are not yet broadly used, they are primarily exploited by offenders engaged in crypto-related crimes like ransomware, fraud, and the sale of drugs and other illegal items. The modus operandi for laundering tends to be quite basic. A key challenge we identified is the lack of available data, which continues to limit in-depth research in this field. We look forward to sharing further insights in the upcoming research brief, which will also address the challenges of regulating crypto assets. This brief is currently in preparation. Special thanks to ESC UNIL – École des sciences criminelles, GLITSS, and COST Action for the support. Thanks John Collins Orfeas A.
