#Philanthropy has a huge role to play in climate action. However, according to this new report by Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy Global Philanthropy, the latest global data on philanthropic funding for climate change mitigation points to a slowdown in 2022 compared to the consistent growth from 2019- 2021. #️⃣Overall, in 2022, climate change mitigation received less than 2 percent of philanthropic donations globally. In fact, data from Environmental Funding by European shows that environmental grant-making continues to remain a mere fraction (5%) of European foundation giving in 2021. 🤝In response, civil society organisations are prioritizing collaboration over competition, polling expertise to unlock funding opportunities. The report highlights the Systemic Climate Action Collaborative, of which Climate-KIC is a founding member, saying it “unites prominent foundations, philanthropists, systems change organizations, corporations, and public institutions, among others, with a common goal of radical collaboration, streamlined coordination, cohesion, and a pooling of resources among those dedicated to fighting climate inaction.” The report also provides well-researched spotlights on migration and democracy and the nexus of AI and philanthropy. 📖Follow this link for more: https://lnkd.in/gEnJ5YiX and find out about the Systemic Climate Action Collaborative: https://lnkd.in/dKfMAbZT Reos Partners, Democratic Society, Community Arts Network, Vinnova, Metabolic, The B Team, Dark Matter Labs, Pyxera Global, Open Earth Foundation, BwB, The Club of Rome, Futerra, International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)

🌿 Can systems innovation make transport safer for Indian women? To support the latest episode of our podcast, we invited Development Alternatives to write an article on how learning about systems innovation shaped their approach to mobility in India. Women across India face significant challenges when using public transport and often forego education or employment opportunities due to safety concerns on their commute. While in cities the challenges are pronounced, it is worse in rural areas. Development Alternatives (DA) employs local women as e-rickshaw drivers in Northern India, and have developed a model for how low-carbon transportation can improve safety, empower women and reduce emissions. In this article, shabnam Durani and Shrishti Vyas (She/Her) explain how being part of the Systems Innovation Learning Partnership’s Experimentation Fund has been crucial for the project's success. ➡️ Read more here: https://bit.ly/4f8VCJU #SILP #LearningForClimate

Together with our partners from the Systems Transformation Hub, we congratulate Ursula von der Leyen on her second term as President of the European Commission. This reappointment provides an encouraging and hopeful signal to advance the EU’s green and social agendas. ➡️ In our current climate of political instability both within and beyond Europe’s borders, von der Leyen’s confirmation provides a signal of stability and continuity and underscores the importance of the #EuropeanGreenDeal. ➡️ We are concerned, however, about potential backsliding on environmental standards and climate legislation. Simplification and optimisation of the #EGD is necessary, but it must not come at the cost of reduced ambition. A strong EGD is Europe’s greatest hope for future competitiveness and socio-economic development. ➡️ Implementation of the #EDG requires foresight and a systemic approach to be outlined under von der Leyen’s leadership by the new Commission. The Systems Transformation Hub and its members EIT Climate-KIC, Systemiq Ltd., Metabolic, World Resources Institute Europe and The Club of Rome stand ready to support the new European Commission and Member States in this important task. 👇See the full statement on the reappointment of Ursula von der Leyen here: https://lnkd.in/e29w_QNt

🌍 How do we advance locally led development? Over the last few years, interest in locally led development has grown considerably in the development co-operation sector. In response to this, EIT Climate-KIC recently co-facilitated two sessions with the OECD - OCDE to consider the following questions: ➡️ How can international funders provide better support to governments and grassroots innovators in low- and middle-income countries? ➡️ How can these funders strengthen local innovation ecosystems and offer more effective support in scaling up novel approaches and solutions? In a new article, we reflect on these questions with the help of insights from some of the leading voices in the field, including: Dr. Ratna Devi, Chioma (Umeasiegbu) Ogbozor, Dr. Forhad Zahid Shaikh, Thomas Feeny, Ada Marmion - Soucadaux, Ben Ramalingam and Dr. Emmy Chirchir (PhD) MBS. 👉 Read more here: https://bit.ly/4dmZUf9 #InternationalDevelopment #LocalInnovation ✏️ Benjamin Kumpf and Seth Armstrong-Twigg

🎙️The latest How Could We? podcast episode is out now! 🌿This series is focused on the transformative potential of development funding and our first guest is Any Sulistyowati, a distinguished Donella Meadows Leadership Fellow and one of the Community Grantmakers for the Systems Innovation Learning Partnership (SILP), a project funded by Sida. 💬In this episode, we discuss the shortcomings of traditional funding mechanisms, how internalised power dynamics hinder genuine local development and how we can collectively reimagine funding practices to support transformative change on the ground. 🗣️As Any says, “Donors need to be comfortable with their vulnerable position because when you give your trust to the grantee, there is a risk. The key is to listen to the grantee about how they understand the situation. Donors may also have to change their paradigm about control in order to achieve important output. Instead of controlling everything - which is very hard - we can invite the grantees to speak up and shape their project towards more experimentation and learning.” 🍎 Listen now on Apple Podcasts - https://lnkd.in/eUzGpm2J 🟢 Listen now on Spotify - https://lnkd.in/e9p-zCQa This episode was hosted by Anne-Sophie Clulow-Garrigou & Solla Zophoniasdottir and produced by Bárbara Mendes-Jorge . https://lnkd.in/evTEuwcD #EITCommunity #HowCouldWe #ClimateAction #DevelopmentFunding #ClimateResilien

🔎 A look at EU Cities Mission two years in “It is exciting to see the progress cities are making in the quest for climate neutrality and to have the opportunity to learn from each other, share best practises and support each other”," said Patrick Child, Cities Mission Manager and Deputy Director General for EU Environment and Climate at the European Commission, at the opening of the third edition of the Mission Cities conference “Empowering Cities – The Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission in Action”. Part of the Valencia Cities Climate Week, the Cities Mission Conference offered a dynamic space for collaboration and networking, bringing together political representatives and practitioners from cities, officials from EU institutions and NetZeroCities' partners. Over the two days, participants had the opportunity to take part in plenary sessions, peer-to-peer exchange sessions, policy labs, discussion panels and workshops. The key highlight of the conference was the launch of the Climate City Capital Hub, an international finance resource to support cities in their journey towards climate neutrality. The annual event is organised by the European Commission and NetZeroCitiesEU, an EU Mission platform led by Climate-KIC to support more than 100 European cities to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.
