Congratulations to our circular friends in Canada on organizing the first North American Hotspot Event! HCH director Freek van Eijk van Eijk shares his experience ⤵️
The first Circular Economy Hotspot Event in North America comes to an end. The Circular Economy Showcase 2024 event was the thirteenth CE Hotspot Event and held this week at the University of Guelph, Canada. We had participants from a.o. Turkey, Mexico, the US, former organisers from NRW in Germany and the Netherlands. I was honoured to give the opening keynote and Holland Circular Hotspot's Special Envoy Professor Jacqueline Cramer summarised the event at the end. A circular Economy transition is all about combining Bottom-Up and Top-Down actions, it is about Leadership and Building coalitions. Within Network and Circular Hubs frontrunning stakeholders can start initiatives, pilots or demonstration projects in coalitions of the willing. They Built trust and have a Learning by Doing approach. Policy makers set goals and standards but entrepreneurs should not wait for them. Citizens engagement is essential and everybody has a role to play and can create their own value wether, economic, social or environmental. If "you can measure it you can manage it". Data is needed to show succes Celebrate success. Work internationally in a collaborative way. We have so much to learn from each other. Most cited keywords during the event were #collaboration, #communication, #waste-as-a-resource and #pilot projects. The work of our circular friends in Ontario, especially in the field in agrifood and the wider bio-economy is impressive. Also the built environment is in motion. There were great examples on Dutch and Canadian innovations in building and construction, packaging and food. Edwin Hamoen shared the #biobased materials they have been codeveloping with industry Wageningen Food & Biobased Research. Jopie de Zeeuw represented Biobased Creations presented the nature building kit with examples of biobased materials in housing. Other Dutch companies present were DESPRAY Environmental ♻️Rabobank The Waste Not Spot Hydraloop. We were Impressed by the social projects on reducing food waste in communities and enforcing small enterprises in the City Of Guelph. Great work Vivian De Giovanni Justine Dainard David Ma and so many others! Marjan Lahuis and Harman Idema of the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Toronto did a fantastic job during the event. Enormous gratitude to Colin Isaacs for making this happen in Canada! During the event I was really proud to announce that the next edition of the the North and Central America CE Hotspot event will take place in #Mexico! Asked about her attitude in uncertain global times former minister Cramer mentioned she has "active hope" for the future So let us pick up the glove and built the future we want and collaborate at international level and implement locally! Workshop Recap: Advancing the Bioeconomy in the Delta Region Last week, HCH, in collaboration with the Province of Zeeland Anita de Moor, and supported by Willem Sederel and ICLEI, Malen Otero, organized and delivered a pivotal workshop to determine the first steps for co-developing a bioeconomy strategy for the Delta Region. The workshop is a crucial step to engage the quadruple helix in developing the Delta Region's Bioeconomy Blueprint under Biomodel4Regions. 💡 The discussions were diverse and insightful, thanks to the balanced representation of private sector, public sector, and research & knowledge institutions. Participants brought various perspectives from different roles in the value chain. This diversity was essential for tackling the major challenges in advancing the bioeconomy, such as technical, scaling-up issues and adapting consumer behavior, as emphasized by Ralph Pessers, from Wageningen University & Research. Jo-Annes de Bat, Provincial Executive of Zeeland, emphasized that regional bioeconomy development is achievable even with limited space, provided that priorities are effectively managed. The key takeaway is that the workshop's discussions have opened up new pathways for solutions, setting the stage for collaborative opportunities and potential project proposals under the CBE JU Horizon Europe call. 🗓️ Next steps will be to draft the Blueprint and involve the key stakeholders to ensure a realistic, feasible, and desirable document is produced that reflects the needs and opportunities for the Bioeconomy in the Delta Region. 📣 We are also excited to announce that HCH is now a member of the Biobased Industry Consortium (BIC), representing SMEs. Want to make your voice heard and be considered for EU proposals? Join us! Busy and happy times for Holland Circular Hotspot. We recently had incoming delegations from Slovenia at BlueCity (010) on Food, construction and energy and from Finland at the PROVADA (on Low Carbon Built Environment). We participated in inspiring business driven sessions from the DSGCoalition (on Leadership) and from the NLExpo2025 - Netherlands participation at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Next week we will guide a delegation at the Circular Economy Showcase: Canada's Hotspot for Business Innovation (Circular Economy Hotspot Week in Guelp) and we will have Japanese vistors at our office. Next Week we will also set up camp in the province Zeeland for our EU project Biomodel4Regions for a full day with workshops on #AdvancingRegionalBioeconomy. In all this we will never forget to interact with our biggest and closest neighbour! With the support of Germany Trade & Invest and the German-Dutch Chamber of Commerce (DNHK) our CEO Freek van Eijk participated in the "German-Dutch Forum on Bioeconomy and Recycling". Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was in the spotlight of the international stage in Amsterdam. We enjoyed the panel discussion, moderated by Aldo Lodder with Ingeborg Gort (Director Strategy & Processes at the consulting firm Partners for Innovation), Freek van Eijk (Director, Holland Circular Hotspot), Beatrice Großjohann (Managing Director Bioeconomy Center Anklam ), Britta Wyss Bisang (Global Sustainability Director, Schoeller Allibert) and Drea Berghorst Berghorst (MD Netherlands, PlasticsEurope Nederland). ✨Looking back: Slovenian-Dutch Business Delegation Trade Event 🇸🇮🇳🇱 Two weeks ago, the Slovenian delegation trade event, co-organized by Slovene Dutch Business Platform - SDBP and Holland Circular Hotspot, was an incredible success! With 33 Slovenian companies and nearly 80 participants, the event featured vibrant business matchmaking and inspiring showcases from both countries, focusing on three key themes: #sustainablefood, #energy, and #circularconstruction. The event was held in BlueCity (010), a hub of circularity in Rotterdam. Freek van Eijk contributed significantly by organizing and moderating the food panel, highlighting circular practices and inspiring models. This was followed by the energetic workshop on the power of a circular economy to connect the building, food, and energy sectors, facilitated by our special envoy, Vesna Lavtizar, PhD Lavtizar. 🤝 In her opening speech, Sabine Rau-Oberhuber emphasized the importance of extending circular value chains beyond borders: "The circular economy is about creating circular value chains, and they are by definition something which stretches beyond national borders. In that respect, I'm very pleased we have this delegation here." This encapsulated one of the day’s key takeaways: the importance of collaboration. To conclude the event, the delegation visited FoodX Netherlands, which included inspiring presentations on Agrifood innovations within Foodvalley NL and a virtual reality experience of the food of the future. #circulareconomy #food #construction #energy #delegation #businessdevelopment #businessmodels #slovenia #internationalexchange Edo Sternad Franc Matjaž (Tičo) Zupančič Luka Šinkovec Leo Swart Vesna Lavtizar, PhD Freek van Eijk Marko Sladojevic Rok Sternad Johan O.
