Jacqueline Vaessen was in Germany and talked about the value of the ‘golden triangle’ of businesses, knowledge institutioneel and governments. Especially when it comes to grand challenges as #circularcarbon
💚 In collaboration with Forum für Zukunftsenergien e. V., we organised a seminar focused on the green transition in the chemical industry, particularly in the context of European competitiveness. In his opening remarks, our new Head of Economic Affairs, Robert-Jan Sieben, emphasised the need for an integrated approach to enhance the sustainability of the Dutch-German chemical cluster. While high energy prices remain a significant challenge for the industry, it is crucial not to lose sight of strengthening all the framework conditions essential for a successful transition. Dr. Beate Baron, Deputy Director General for Decarbonisation, Climate Action, and Environmental Protection in Industry at the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, provided a comprehensive overview of Germany’s strategy to support the chemical sector in this transformation. Wytske van der Mei from our Ministry of Climate and Green Growth i.a. presented the Dutch initiative advocating for a European approach to promote the circular use of carbon in the industry. Jacqueline Vaessen, Chair of the Top Sector Chemistry, shared valuable insights on fostering collaboration between science, the private sector, and public institutions to drive innovation and boost R&D valorisation. 🙏 A huge thanks to all who contributed to this insightful event, including Enno Harks (BP Europe SE), Caspar von Ziegner (Novocarbo), and panelists Matthias Belitz (VCI), Thomas Heilmann (MdB CDU/CSU), Markus Töns (MdB SPD), and Dr. Simon Wolf (Germanwatch). Special appreciation goes to Forum für Zukunftsenergien for their partnership. We look forward to continued collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure the success of this critical transition. #NLinGermany #GreenTransition #ChemicalIndustry #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #CircularEconomy #Innovation

Reflection on our innovation mission to China last week.
Last week we brought a delegation of 32 startups, scale-ups, knowledge institutes and government to #China in the field of #biobased #materials, #circular #materials and #Carbon #Capture #Utilisation (CCU) and #Storage (CCS). The diplomatic network facilitated visits to industrial parcs, research institutes and meetings with the government. During the Pujiang Innovation Forum we were able to liaise with innovation and industry policy in China. Some general observations: - In a geopolitical complex time, #sustainable #manufacturing and products is a shared challenge and is a driver for exchange and collaboration. - The impact of cleantech innovation is obvious. The silence in the streets and #air #quality as a result of the large EV presence in traffic in cities like Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou is impressive. - Regulation of the European market is an important driver for sustainability in China. - China has a national #carbon #emission #trading system for power plants. Recently it has been decided to extend this pricing system to steel. - Since 2023 the government is incentivizing the use of biomass. - The government is setting sustainability targets and introduces regulation for industry to reach these targets – we saw examples on regional level where targets are connected to the #government as #launching #customer to support green business cases. - #Environmental #rules become more and more strict in China. - #Permits take 6 months – regions compete for short permitting processes to attract private investments. - As China is eager to learn from Europe, Europe can also learn a lot from China. More Dutch students (master or PhD) might consider to do part of their research at a Chinese university or research institute. Within the possibilities of the diplomatic ties with China, we will follow-up collaboration with China in the field of green and circular materials and CCU(S). Day 5 - Green Chemistry and Circular Plastics Innovation Mission – Welcome to the GBA China is the world's largest producer and consumer of both chemical products and plastics. Besides, it is prioritising the decarbonisation of its chemical industry to reduce its footprint as the largest emitter of greenhouse gases. Quality of research is increasing rapidly and opportunities for scaling up technologies are present, making collaboration worthwhile to explore: Solving global challenges together. Within this context, a delegation focused on green chemistry (biobased chemistry and CCUS) and circular plastics is in China this week, consisting of a diverse group of 29 participants from Dutch companies and knowledge institutes, together with representatives of the government and industry. Today, Wednesday, September 11, is the first day of the delegation’s programme in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The programme started with a welcome breakfast at the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Guangzhou, where Efstathios Andreou welcomed the delegation members and Wielande Li gave a briefing of the two-day programme in the region. The first visit was to Kingfa Sci.&Tech. Co., Ltd., a leading company in Asia for modified plastics and a major player in China's plastics production and recycling. They are also an engineering-resin supplier to top auto OEMs. Chairman of Kingfa, Pingxu Chen and Chief Scientist, Jianjun Li lead a lively discussion with the delegation about the future of Kingfa, the plastics industry and possible collaborations. After Kingfa, the delegation split into two tracks. Track 1 visited DataBeyond, a waste sorting plant specialising in AI and optoelectronic integration-based intelligent sorting equipment for MRF, MSW, C&I, and C&D. The delegation members also had the opportunity to try the advanced sorting machines with water bottles: ‘very quick, very impressive’." Track 2 visited South China University of Technology (SCUT), a top Chinese university in chemistry and materials. After sharing focus themes, The SCUT School of Chemical Engineering and the Dutch delegation engaged in a dynamic dialogue on common interests. At the end of the day, both tracks combined again to attend a networking reception with Chinese companies and research institutes at the residence of the Consul General of the Netherlands in Guangzhou. Stay connected with us to follow the delegation programme and stay informed on future developments in Green Chemistry, Circular Plastics Innovation and more.
