Good news Friday! It is rain season for the Carboneers, and rain seasons are for building! Over a month ago, a new Carboneer joined the team. With a dual PhD in Soil Science and International Agriculture & Development, focussed on biochar, Daniel Guarín, Ph.D. could not have been a better match to further strengthen our team! His work explored diverse areas such as legacy impacts of biochar on forest fertility, socio-economic and hydro-ecological modeling for ecosystem service provision, soil pollutant dynamics and mitigation strategies in agroforestry cacao crops, narrowing gender gaps in traditional agriculture, drone surveying for crop growth and soil moisture, and the impacts of soil fertility on rural education and gendered labor. With his multidisciplinary background and passion, Daniel is well-positioned to contribute to Carboneers' mission, leveraging his scientific expertise and human-centric approach to implement sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and farming communities worldwide. Our new Head of Science, will focus mostly on the quantification and certification of co-benefits derived from the projects. Experiments and impact reports will be shared on these, as we have seen that there is an increasing interest in reporting on other impacts as well. Especially with the new CSRD regulation that became obligatory to report on in Europe since 2024.

Biochar has seen remarkable growth in the Voluntary Carbon Markets, with reports that the demand has doubled each of the last three years. 🚴♀️ Good news Friday! 🚴♂️ 💎 On behalf of all Ghanaian Carboneers we are excited to share that a new biochar project has been certified by Carbon Standards International AG and CERES - CERtification of Environmental Standards GmbH. Which is the first certified biochar project in West-Africa (that we know of). 💪 Since our first visit to the Upper West and Volta region in December 2023, Daps Abimbola and his on ground team, Mart de Bruijn and Berend de Haas have been working really hard to roll out the biochar production and application training and the use of the PlantVillage dMRV system to collect data. Since then, already over 1500 tons of biochar have been produced, sequestering the equivalent of over 2500 tons of carbon dioxide! 💡 Interested in taking climate responsibility for your company by offsetting your hard to abate emissions whilst supporting Ghanaian farmers with the production of biochar to mitigate the effects of climate change to their soils?
