The Strategic Program Cancer is a cross-disciplinary cancer platform at UMC Utrecht. We focus on innovative research improving the outcome of those at risk or affected with cancer.
We focus on six research themes:
1. Biology of cancer
2. Cancer models
3. High-precision surgery
4. Image-guided therapies
5. Real-life cohorts
6. Therapies from gene to cell

❗ Lobular breast cancer treatment should improve.
About 15 in 100 women with breast cancer have lobular breast cancer, also called invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC).
“ILC is a specific type of breast cancer with a very special biology. There is a general treatment for it, but not yet specific enough. To arrive at a proper diagnosis and tailored treatment, we need a better understanding of that biology. The scientific research needed for this is very expensive and something of a long haul. Therefore, awareness and support is needed,” says Patrick Derksen, professor of experimental and preclinical oncology at UMC Utrecht.
❓ Would you, as a patient, healthcare professional or researcher, like to know more about the latest ILC developments?
Then, join us on a special conference, which will take place on 15 October 2024, the first Lobular Breast Cancer Global Awareness Day.
UMC Utrecht, Erasmus MC, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek/The Netherlands Cancer Institute and Maastricht UMC together organize this unique congress to create more awareness among patients, healthcare professionals and researchers about this special type of breast cancer.
Experts from various disciplines and institutes, such as Patrick Derksen, Sabine Linn, Paul Van Diest, Thiemo van Nijnatten and patient advocate Rian Terveer-Couperus, will provide you with the latest insights on research, treatments and more.
🗓 When? 15 October 2024, 13.00-18.00.
🏥 Where? Auditorium Princess Máxima Center, Utrecht Science Park.

💡 ILC Facts:
◽About 15% of all breast cancer patients have invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC).
◽In lobular breast cancer, tumor cells grow separately from each other, and are scattered throughout the breast tissue.
◽ In this type of cancer, it is more common for multiple tumors to develop simultaneously, in one or both breasts.
◽ ILC is harder to find with a mammogram or ultrasound, especially in women with dense breast tissue. An MRI scan works better.
◽ Lobular breast cancer can often be treated well with anti-hormone therapy.

#utrechtcancer#utrechtscienceweek
... Treating patients with cancer faster and more effectively using the latest minimally invasive techniques.
... While at the same time relieving the continuing pressure on the healthcare system.
That's what IMAGINE is striving for!
🤝 This open innovation lab brings together companies, research and educational institutions, and will significantly improve the lives of and care for people with cancer.
Public and private partners join hands within IMAGINE to work jointly on image-guided innovations. In the process, the latest mathematical, AI and data technologies are combined with image-guided techniques and interventions.
💡 With IMAGINE, the partners would like to achieve that:
🔹 people with cancer will get faster access to the latest image-guided treatments.
🔹 they will receive minimally invasive treatment more often (instead of having to undergo surgery).
🔹 the healthcare system will be relieved because fewer operating rooms, intensive care units and healthcare professionals will be needed.
🔹 healthcare costs will be reduced (because medicines or hospitalizations are more expensive)
🔹 healthcare professionals will get a future-proof training in an inspiring work environment.
Within IMAGINE, UMC Utrecht cooperates with Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, Catharina Ziekenhuis, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, Elekta, Fontys Hogeschool, Hogeschool Utrecht, De Haagse Hogeschool / The Hague University of Applied Sciences, KALCIO Healthcare, Lygature, Philips, Radboudumc, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Tesla Dynamic Coils, Universiteit Utrecht and @Utrecht Inc.
Soon, the partners and the NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) will sign their cooperation agreement. Together, the NWO and the partners will invest a total of about 54 million euros (spread over ten years) in IMAGINE.

💡 Less and even more precise radiation sessions with the MR-Linac. This is not only less stressful for patients with prostate cancer, but also ensures that more patients can be treated more quickly.
Intermediate-risk prostate cancer is currently being treated in five radiation sessions with the MR-Linac. During the TURBO study, UMC Utrecht researchers Jochem van der Voort van Zyp, Tariq Lalmahomed and their team will research whether two radiation sessions could become the new standard treatment.
Jochem: “What’s new in this study is that we will make an MRI scan every two seconds during radiation therapy. This will allow us to check whether the tumor is still located in the radiation field.”
This will not only be extremely beneficial to the patients involved but also for healthcare in general, as more patients can be treated in the same time span.
Tariq: “Sustainable care is future-proof care. Our goal is to provide every patient with the best possible care, while bearing in mind society as a whole.”
