Last Thursday and Friday, our first and second-year students had the incredible opportunity to have a workshop with Dr. Eleanor Boden, who passionately shared her research, "Where did all the girls go? Gender, Education, and Work in the Horseracing Industry." Eleanor delved into the equestrian identity, discussing how her research extends beyond horseracing to has a part to play all equestrian sports. She shed light on the crucial difference between misogyny and sexism, fostering a deeper understanding among our students. The sessions explored perceptions surrounding our sport, equestrian culture, and the behaviors we adopt to fit into societal norms. Hot topics such as the mankini incident, the Helgstrand documentary and other news headlines opened a dialogue about the challenges our sport currently faces. The workshop concluded with Eleanor asking the students to envision the future of our sport. The responses were incredible – inclusive, progressive, equal opportunity, fair pay, welfare-focused (both human and equine), sustainable, less judgmental and safer workplace environment. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Eleanor Boden for highlighting the crucial conversation about the equestrian identity and shedding light on critical issues within the equestrian industry and how our students can be part of the change! #equestrianidentity #sexism #equality #bettersport

Dr. Gulsah Kaya Karasu recently published a remarkable article titled " Dietary Transitions Toward Sustainable Horse Feeding" as part of the Sustainable Horse Feeding NWO-ISAAC funding project. This study represents an innovative step forward in understanding sustainability in the equine industry, emphasizing the delicate balance required to optimize current resources while preserving the present and future of the environment. In the agricultural sector, environmental pollution such as greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen emissions, and leaching has received special attention. Dr. Karasu's research shows that sustainability in the equine industry starts with a thorough examination and critique of current feeding and management practices, paving the way for changes that are in line with social and legal obligations. This research not only advances the equine industry's journey toward sustainability, but it also contributes to curriculum development. For full text G.Kaya Karasu et al. (2023).
