Showing the world the possibilities of sustainable energy and technological innovation by winning solar powered races!
Over ons
The Brunel Solar Team is a non-profit prestige project with students from the Delft University of Technology. Its aim is winning the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, a 3000 km race straight through the hot desert of Australia, purely using solar energy. The vision is to inspire the world with high-end technology and superefficient use of sustainable energy. The Brunel Solar Team has won the World Solar Challenge seven times since 2001, with its Nuna 1, Nuna 2, Nuna 3, Nuna 4, Nuna 7, Nuna 8 and Nuna 9. Nuna 5 and Nuna 6 placed second. Since 2016 a new team of enthusiastic students are set out to race in South Africa, the Sasol Solar Challenge. This team does not build a new car, but is improving Nuna, which is used the year before at the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, even further for the challenging conditions in South Africa. In September 2022 we won the Sasol Solar Challenge for the fourth time in a row. Would you like to know more about the team and the car? P3!!!! 🍾 We have worked incredibly hard all year and stayed true to our team motto: "Winning as a resilient and innovative team by taking on challenges head-on." We developed our own motor and solar panel, both promising, along with many other projects. Unfortunately, our motor broke down on the second day. It was a huge setback, especially because we worked on it day and night. Still, we know we gave it our all. We've made significant progress and shared valuable knowledge with many companies. That’s what it’s all about: innovation. We will continue to share what we’ve learned. We are extremely proud of ourselves and of Nuna. 🧡 TEAM NUNA!

Cape Town is in sight! Today was the blind stage of the Sasol Solar Challenge! We didn’t know the route in advance. The route was revealed to us last night, so our strategists worked tirelessly to prepare and crunch the numbers for today. It was a beautiful day with clear skies, and green hills. Nuna did well and we gave it our all today, but we weren’t able to close the gap on our competitors, Innoptus Solar Team and Solar Team Twente. Tomorrow is the final day of the Solar Challenge, and we’re ready to give it everything we’ve got! 💪🌞 Standings after day 5: 1. Innoptus Solar Team 2. Solar Team Twente 3. Brunel Solar Team 4. Cheering for Nuna 🙌 This sixth day of the Sasol Solar Challenge has passed in the blink of an eye. When the morning mist cleared, a beautiful scenery was revealed. We went toe to toe with Innoptus Solar Team and Solar Team Twente. Shortly after the start, Twente took first place in the daily standings. We battled back and forth for second place with Innoptus. At the loop stop, we were greeted by an amazing crowd, cheering Nuna on. When crossing the finish line, all teams had driven six loops, keeping the gaps between the teams the same as yesterday. This makes tomorrow another exciting day, especially with the full blind stage. Tonight, tomorrow's route will be revealed. Standings after day 5: 1. Innoptus Solar Team 2. Solar Team Twente 3. A calm day at the Sasol Solar Challenge Today we were welcomed with clear skies, scorching Kalahari sun and heavy wind gusts. We stuck to our strategy and managed to drive 6 loops today, just like Solar Team Twente. Our Belgian competitors Innoptus Solar Team decided to drive two additional loops. This might be the calm before the storm and we are excited to go into day 6! Standings after day 5: 1. Innoptus Solar Team 2. Solar Team Twente 3. Brunel Solar Team 4. Onda Solare 5. Today, at the halfway point of the Sasol Solar Challenge, our team took on the half blind stage. The half blind stage is one of the special stages of the challenge. While the main route was known in advance, the loop route was only announced yesterday evening. To make things even more difficult, the route was challenging, with roadworks and hilly terrain. It was a tough day for our strategist! Despite this, we managed to stay close to the competition, and we're eager to take on Day 5 of the challenge! Standings after day 4: 1. Solar Team Twente 2. All clear skies for Nuna 🌞 This morning, we kicked off with some final checks and controls after yesterday's motor swap, ensuring everything was ready for a strong start. We began the day in first position, helped by clear skies and plenty of sunshine. However, Solar Team Twente and Innoptus Solar Team quickly managed to overtake us. Despite this, we stuck to our strategy and will start close behind Innoptus and Twente as we head into the half-blind stage tomorrow. Tonight, we'll receive a golden envelope, revealing the unknown length of tomorrow’s loop. Standings after day 3: 1. Innoptus Solar Team 2. Solar Team Twente 3. Brunel Solar Team 4. Onda Solare 5. Nuna reclaimed first place in the Sasol Solar Challenge. The competition heated up on this second day as we had a close battle with Innoptus Solar Team and Solar Team Twente all day long. It was a day full of traffic and our team even had to stop to swap the motor. Nuna and Twente's Red XI completed 4 loops, while the Belgian Infinite completed 3 loops. This puts us at the top of the leader board, with Twente close behind due to their later finish. Standings after day 2: 1. Brunel Solar Team 2. Innoptus Solar Team 3. Solar Team Twente 4.
