The assignment? 🚗 Jump into a car with your team 📍 Figure out which locations were in the cryptic photos your team received ↪ Drive to the location 📸 Take a picture with your team at each spot 🤑 Earn points for each location you find It was great fun to drive around Eindhoven and complete these tasks - and of course to see all the photos. What an inspiring day at the PyData Conference in Eindhoven last Thursday, July 11! It was great to reconnect with the local AI community and mingle with peers. Here are my top 3 takeaways:   *Supercharging LLMs with Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG)* The session on RAG was a deep dive into how this technique is revolutionizing the application of Large Language Models (LLMs). By combining retrieval methods like vector search with LLMs, RAG addresses key issues such as hallucinations and restricted access to internal data. This technique enables the generation of more accurate, cite-able responses by pulling in additional information from diverse data types.   *Combining ML and Econometrics for Accurate Causal Forecasting* Another insightful session tackled the challenge of unobserved confounders in causal forecasting. By integrating advanced Econometrics techniques with state-of-the-art Machine Learning (ML) methods, the presented approach enhances causal inference accuracy. This hybrid solution is especially crucial for decision-making processes like retail pricing, where understanding the true causal effects is vital.   *The Future of Local AI with AI PCs and OpenVINO Toolkit* Intel introduced an AI PC, equipped with CPU, GPU, and NPU, capable of running Generative AI in seconds, not hours. This setup, coupled with the OpenVINO Toolkit, optimizes and deploys deep learning models locally, addressing common cloud AI issues like data privacy, high latency, and cloud dependency. Data engineering will help you transform your data in such a way that it is ready for consumption by applications.    But what does that process look like?    1️⃣  Extract  The first step is to extract the raw data from the source to be transformed. This can be done in two ways:  🔸 Streaming – there's a continuous collecting of live data taking place   🔸 Batch – data is collected and inserted in an interval     2️⃣  Transform  In this phase, we are making sure data is readily usable for your applications. The three main activities in data transformation are: cleansing the data, restructuring the data so it is ready for consumption & finally combining multiple data tables into one.    3️⃣  Load  Now we are ready to load the transformed data into a database so it can be used by applications. Data can be loaded into three different types of databases:    ➡️ Data warehouse – only supports tabular and structured data.  ➡️ Data lake – supports unstructured data in all different formats.   ➡️ Data lakehouse - a combination of a data lake data warehouse. 4️⃣ Applications Finally, your data is ready to be used for various applications like dashboards, analysis or data science.    Follow along as we will be sharing more insights on why #dataengineering should be an essential part of your data initiatives soon. Having a Single Source of Truth (#SSoT) in your organization builds confidence in the data and frees up your data team's time. ⏱    ➡ A large manufacturer of commercial vehicles realized that their current layered views were causing performance inefficiencies. In addition, their nested queries were leading to illegibility and preventing them from establishing a single source of truth.    Recognizing the importance of establishing an SSoT and the need to maintain efficiency and reduce maintenance, they sought the help of our Bright Cape Data Engineering team.    Together we created a parameterized layered structure of different views. This approach, coupled with SQL query optimization, resulted in:    ✅ A Single Source of Truth that provides structure  ✅ Improved maintainability and readability  ✅ A 70x increase in performance    Thanks Aad Zandbergen for your great work on this project!
